Here is a shot that shows Adolf in place.
You can see his legs are in front, and partially obscure, those of Larry Bell.
Here is another shot after Johnny Weissmuller had been added, and Hitler removed.
As can be seen, Weissmuller is slid in behind Bell, and Bell’s legs are clear of obstruction.
Whatever Robert Fraser’s memory, the photographs show that Hitler was removed rather than obscured by The Beatles standing in front of him.

That’s not to say that he wasn’t inserted back in once The Beatles were ready to pose for the shot, again, I’m gonna prefer the first-hand account over second-hand interpretations of “documentation” that’s incomplete. The censored cut-out is standing by at close proximity as though it’s going to be placed in somewhere..:-)

Here are various outtake shots from the run that included the cover shot, Adolf is nowhere to be seen in any of them.
It was a heavily photographed session, there are multiple shots of The Beatles posing. The area in which they stand is shown throughout, and there is no sign of Hitler in any of the alternate shots – however much of the area that was covered by where they stood in the shot that was used is shown. I think photographic evidence carries more weight than one person’s memory.

I don’t agree, perhaps if the session was filmed it’d be different but the censored cut-out doesn’t appear in any of the “outtakes” because it wasn’t supposed to. They had no idea which “take” was going to be used until the film was developed (yes, people had to develop their photos in darkrooms back then) and every shot was potentially “the ONE” and easily explains why you don’t see the cut-out, because it was decided that it was too controversial to be seen. The interview clip that I referenced says “he’s behind the four Beatles”, now that could also mean the Madame Toussauds Beatle Wax Figures, but he remembers hiding the cut-out “behind the four Beatles”. I wish that I could link the interview clip for you but this is the best that I can do http://sidmchenry.podomatic.com/ and unfortunately this podcast is a work in progress and the next volume to be cast (#9) contains the clip and hasn’t been made available yet. Being a 1981 Radio Program dates the clip less than 14 years after the shoot and it’s doubtful that Robert Fraser’s memory would be so clouded, considering that this would be a lifetime achievement of his that he’d likely remember quite clearly. Just because there’s no photographic evidence proving his claim doesn’t mean that he made something like that up, nobody else who was there to my knowledge refutes this happening so I don’t see any reason to doubt it because of the photos. If you were to take every photo taken that day and strung them together into a video, giving each 3 seconds, how long do you think that that video would play out? Nowhere near as long as the time spent staging the set for those photographs, yes the “photographic evidence” is incomplete…:-)

This photograph in particular, that you provided, I question its authenticity and epitomizes why “photographic evidence” must always be placed under great scrutiny. I call forgery on this one for it appears to me that someone inserted stills from the ‘Hello Goodbye ‘ promo video (filmed several months later) overtop of one of the originals….:-)

I’ll hold my hands up to that one. I’m not sure on it. Though it should be noted that in the Hello, Goodbye video, both John and Paul have lost their moustaches, Paul’s medal is in a different place on his jacket, and John’s hair is different. So, accepting it could be a fake, with Ringo the only one that’s not flown in, there’s been a lot of airbrushing to make it fit. But, yeah, good chance it’s a fake.
However, I did find this one, which there’s no doubt about, and it shows Hitler still standing off to the right.
The trouble is that many of the images have been clipped to squares. The only way to know for sure would be if the full wideshots that were taken were published. Then we could see if Adolf ever moved from that spot.
My own take on it is that they remember that they positioned Hitler, and are forgetting that they took him out. It would be interesting to get their reaction when looking at all the photographs that were taken.

Yeah, I’d be more inclined to trust all those photos than the memory of a former heroin addict who may or may not be fabulating, too. Anyways, it makes for a better story to believe that Hitler is hiding in that famous photo.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

One of the qualities of a good piece of art is that it brings you back to it over and over again, to “rediscover” new things about it. This whole “Hidden Hitler” business certainly is keeping me coming back to the cover over and over again.

Interesting stuff re: hidden hitler. I’ve seen the photo of his cut-out standing off to the side and don’t really believe it would be hidden in the final photos. Still it was cool to see alternate photos from that session, even if that one did look really obviously shopped.
Anyway, if I had to pick 3 or so people for my Sgt Pepper cover, I’d include these:
Nobuo Uematsu – composer of most of the music from the Final Fantasy video game series. Considered by many to be the best game composer ever (he just turned 55 the other day… random info).
G.G. Allin – Controversial (and probably schizophrenic) punk rocker. Definitely included for controversy or shock value.
Skinny Puppy – Either the original lineup of the band, or a reference somewhere. Their back catalogue of avant-garde industrial dance music contains a few notable Beatles references and/or samples. I’d file this choice under influential musicians that not everyone is going to dig, and possibly as a controversial choice.

Sorry, no ‘biblers allowed! Not you, not myself (-selves), not mr. sun king coming together, not even Joe! (In fact, if I was re-starting this thread today, I’d put in a “no living persons under the age of 65” rule. And probably a few others, depending on how capricious I was feeling at the moment…)
