I generally avoid A Day In The Life , I can play it but that song is for listening to at night in the dark in headphones. If I’m feeling up to it, I’ll play along to Within You Without You and play along with the orchestra replying to the sitar.

I love the title track and the reprise because they just rock.
I love LSD because of the awesome visuals from Yellow Submarine that spring to mind when I hear it. I have been a fan of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers since a ridiculously early age and those visuals melded that dancing style with Beatles music and crazy colours back when I was 13.
I admire Day, and like parts of it, but it’s not one of my favourites.

I really loved hearing Paul sing Lovely Rita at the concert in Dallas. I didn’t get to hear it all because he was singing it when Ohhh Boy found me so we could trade seats. Which was OK because I got sit very close to the stage, front and center, just a few rows back.

Yay – another Ringo track. There are some folks in these (and other) parts who suggest that his songs detract from Beatles albums, and yet, as here, there are many of us who think they are what make the Beatles.

We seem to be a minority, tr. I have said before that I think the intro for the title track and reprise are just perfect; the warm up, bright guitar chords, great drums, and audacious horns engage you and let you know you are about to participate in a unique musical experience. McCartney and Martin at their best.

Offline A Day In The Life wins hands down for its complexity, production, melody… a masterpiece.
I think the greatness of Pepper depends on the overall balance and the running order rather than the actual level of the songs (although Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and She’s Leaving Home are outstanding). And this is one of the reasons why Revolver is regarded as superior, sometimes, in the recent years. Pepper is a true “album”, rather than a collection of songs and it seems to me you can’t really take a song out of the context and the flow (as with the later Abbey Road ). A Day In The Life is just the perfect finale.

I agree that the White Album relies upon the running order and the balance too, but it has a slightly different peculiarity, it’s a “parody album”. Pepper creates a “mood” (and so does Abbey Road ), while the White Album is “meta-music”. So they had something completely different in mind when recording the two albums: Pepper had to be a sort of theatrical representation, the White Album had to be a collection of musical genres. But sorry… this belongs to another thread actually.
And as I look at your avatar: Ringo’s drumwork in A Day In The Life is his best in my opinion.

Offline Based purely on the level of instant excitement I feel when I hear the opening notes, I’d say it’s “Lovely Rita .” Those bright, jangly guitars, quickly followed by Paul’s soaring “ahhhh,” then we’ve got a driving drum fill and we’re in.
But the reprise is a really, really close second. By the time the guitar-driven intro is over and Macca lets loose with a pumped-up “wooo!” right before the vocals start, my adrenaline is flowing.

Offline Within You Without You is both my favorite song on Sgt. Pepper and overall among the band’s oeuvre. It perfectly and tragically addresses the sea of illusions from the first side (For me, Pepper is the Beatles’ bleakest work on good days and their most transcendent on bad days).

You expressed my opinion exactly and eloquently, @PeterWeatherby. It is such a good, hard rocker! And that building chord progression leads the listener to anticipate something great–which the lads deliver.

I agree with @mccannon & @trcanberra on these analyses.
Elton
called LSD “the greatest rock and roll song ever written” at a mid 70s concert and is actually my least favorite, which just shoes what a great collection of songs, as well as a concept album, it is. I have to mention what I consider one of the best examples of imagery and alliteration not just in fab4 but all song lyrics anywhere: “took her home and nearly made it, sitting on the sofa with a sister or two “.

Offline Must admit I never really ‘got’ this album until recently.
I’d always liked it, as with everything they’ve ever done, but I thought that the concept and the fame of the album outweighed how good it actually was. Always loved A Day In The Life , Lucy, Getting Better and Good Morning Good Morning , but that other than those it missed really top-tier Beatles songs.
Then about three weeks ago I listened to all of it and the sheer genius of it actually hit me, every song really is amazing. So far ahead of what anyone else was doing. I think it became so overrated, no fault of its own, that in a way it is kind of underrated. Revolver is still stronger on a song by song basis though, in my opinion.

Just came across this andI love it…….I’m sure someone on here has posted it, (though it only has 46 likes on youtube so is relatively fresh), but I can’t find it duplicated………
Anyway is so good that it deserves to be.
I don’t know what’s different but to me it sounds better.
