That thread on the Word got me thinking about this, but a few people said it wouldn’t make their top five songs on the album. As much as I love that song, I’m not sure it would make my top five either on what is my personal favorite album.
So what’s your favorite song?
I’d say Girl, it just makes me drift, but there are some other heavy hitters.

Oh, gosh. Let's see…..

1. I'm Looking Through You
2. Nowhere Man
3. Drive My Car
4. Girl
5. In My Life
6. Norwegian Wood
7. Think For Yourself
8. Michelle
9. The Word
10. Run For Your Life
11. You Won't See Me
12. If I Needed Someone
13. Wait
14. What Goes On

I think I'm fairly happy with that, but it was really hard to pick. The top five could pretty much just swap with each other.

Agreed. That song is one of the reasons I'm glad I bought my Hofner.

Michelle .’I absolutely love this song, and don’t understand why people don’t like it. I also have Nowhere Man , In My life, Norwegian Wood and Think For Yourself in My Top 5, with Girl at 6, The Word at 7, and after that it becomes a grabbag of interchangeability.

This is why we’re glad paulsbass decided to stick around here, his hard work and determination. I decided to listen to it 3 times in a row, but I’ll rank it in tiers.
Tier 1
1. Girl
2. You Won’t See Me
3. The Word
4. Norwegian Wood
5. In My Life
6. Drive My Car
Tier 2
7. Michelle (I agree with you Mr. Sun King , lightweight lyrics be damned, this song is just too sweet)
8. Think For Yourself
9. I’m Looking Through You
10. If I Needed Someone
Tier 3
11. Wait
12. He who must not be named
13. Nowhere Man (a verse too long)
14. What Goes On

Those are interchangable outside of Girl.

The great thing about Rubber Soul is the fact that it is so great. I doubt that anyone would really dislike someone's favourite song (unless it was crazy, like my previous dislike of Tomorrow Never Knows ). Although I think I like Michelle because of the French. As a Canadian who hates French, I really like the fact that the Beatles spoke French (especially since Paul's accent is worse then mine). And:

Couldn't agree more. He certainly makes this a more informed and better place.

Ok guys. I’m going to stand next to Sun King and give my opinion about Michelle . Listen to it, close your eyes and pay attention to this:

That guitar intro.

The armony.

Those lines in French.

Paul’s “I love you, I love you, I love you”.

That little emphasis in “Until I find a way”

That descencing in “I will say the only words I know that you understand..”

Paul’s “I need you, I need you, I neeeed youuu

Oh what you mean to me”

again that descending voice and that little moment between “Until I do I’m hoping that you’ll know…. ” that moment ” what I mean”.

That very sweet “I love you”

That moment in “I want you, I want you, I want you

Paul’s “Oh what you mean to me” every time he says them.

Ok now go on and listen to it. a-hard-days-night-paul-5

Ready? Tell me if you don’t get goosebumps.  Paul delivers and the guys make that song just effing brilliant. a-hard-days-night-paul-9

BTW I'm glad paulsbass is getting kudos. He deserves it. His opinions are great.

Sorry if there was some confusion, I meant Michelle is too sweet to NOT like and it’s definitely one of my favorites. It makes me feel like I’m on a gondola in some luminous village in Italy.
I think Rubber Soul was the peak in terms of voice and harmony for the Beatles. Mith described Michelle and Paul’s fantastic vocal, and I think that John has two of his finest performances in Norwegian Wood and Girl. The way he says “talked until two” and “when I awoke” still give me goosebumps every time and my signature would be my favorite John line ever.

I don't know. Rubber Soul really has amazing voices. Hell, it's their masterpiece.

Completely. Because of him, I now own London Town , Pipes Of Peace and am about to own Chaos And Creation In The Backyard . And while we have had our differences, he was right, I was wrong, and I value his opinions as highly as I value Joe's and Mith's (i.e. Very highly!!).

Gniknus, I know you didn't say anything against Michelle . The thing is that because the song is very sweet, we tend to think of it as a sweet song, but the vocals are amazing.

And I totally agree with you about the voice. Rubber Soul was definetly a peak for John and Paul regarding voices.

I agree that Rubber Soul is the peak for harmonies, but individually, I think John and Paul delivered their best vocals later, probably on the White Album . I'm thinking Happiness Is A Warm Gun for John, and Why don't we do it in the road? for Paul. Maybe You Never Give Me Your Money for Paul.

I'd agree as a whole, but I'd take Girl over anything John did on the White Album , although when you think about it…Happiness, I'm So Tired, Yer Blues , etc, etc…the man could sing. I really like Paul's vocal on I'm Looking Through You.

Really, John and Paul were/are two of the best singers ever. They both had fantastic vocals on all albums, but they were most consistent on RS and the White Album .

Ok, I have a question for anyone, what constitutes a great Paul vocal? I could tell you for John, when he's being honest you can hear the difference in his voice and he just has the most unbelievable ability to convey whatever emotion he's feeling with his voice. But I'm not really sure for Paul, not that I don't think he's an amazing singer or am trying to bash him, I'm just genuinely curious as to what everyone thinks. I really like Paul's descriptive narrator type voice like in Eleanor Rigby or She's Leaving Home. He's sort of impassively describing those stories which I've always thought was brilliant.

When he is singing a slow, melodic ballad and he brings his emotion to the fore. Although his narrator voice (Rigby, For No One ) is great as well. I think I would say when they are authentic (I don't like, say, Oh! Darling or My Mummy's dead).

To answer your question, that same thought applies to Paul – when he's being honest.

mr. S brought up the ballads, and I agree. Songs like Here, There And Everywhere , She's Leaving Home and solo stuff like Someday and Calico Skies. To me, he doesn't sound as good when he forces the vocals as he does in songs like Oh! Darling and Helter Skelter .

BOT: It's no secret by now that I love every song on this album. But if someone held a ray gun to my head, I'd pick The Word .

To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

Part of being a great singer is living the song you are performing and believing in what you are trying to convey. John and George have always sang with a lot of emotion which is very moving. Paul has had his moments but in general he seems to just sing generically. He does a great job on 'Michelle ' All three have their unique vocal range and I have enjoyed listening to 'Rubber Soul ' again and focusing on these details. This has always been my favorite Beatles album.
