What do you think of Ringo’s singing and drumming, take it to the polls and discuss here:
[sp_show_poll id=”148″]
For me, he’s a great drummer, up there with Gene Krupa, Keith Moon, Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, and John Bonham, but he really does suck at singing and I wish they didn’t make him have a song on every album (except for A Hard Day’s Night and Let It Be ), although I do like his backing vocals and they typically stick out when he sings backing. Here’s all of his vocal efforts:
Lead:
Written by John Lennon /Paul McCartney :
Boys (Please Please Me , 1963)
I Wanna Be Your Man (With The Beatles , 1963)
Matchbox (Long Tall Sally (EP), 1964)
Honey Don’t (Beatles For Sale , 1964)
Act Naturally (Help !, 1965)
Yellow Submarine (Revolver , 1966)
With A Little Help From My Friends (Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967)
Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) (Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967 (lead vocals shared by all 4 Beatles))
Good Night (The Beatles, 1968)
Sung and written by:
What Goes On (Rubber Soul , 1965 (partial writing credit))
Flying (Magical Mystery Tour (EP), 1967 (partial writing credit, lead vocals shared by all 4 Beatles))
Don’t Pass Me By (The Beatles, 1968)
Octopus’s Garden (Abbey Road , 1969)
Backing:
Kansas City /Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey (Beatles For Sale , 1964)
Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967)
Hey Jude (Hey Jude (single), 1968)
Carry That Weight (Abbey Road , 1969)
Other:
Yer Blues (The Beatles, 1968 (“1, 2, 3, 4”))
Helter Skelter (The Beatles, 1968 (“I’ve got blisters on my fingers”))

There is a whole thread (at least one maybe more) here on Ringo’s drumming.

His drumming is, needless to say, tops. I wouldn’t call him the best singer ever, but I quite like his voice in the right context. I think my favourite vocal of his is Octopus’s Garden ; I also really love his backing vocals on Carry That Weight .

Didn’t think anyone would think that, so I didn’t mention it.

That thread’s title says “Ringo: A Horrible Drummer”, so I didn’t even bother to look at it. Also, although this thread says drums and vocals, it’s mostly about his vocal abilities.

I think Ringo is a great drummer and when he does stand up to the mic, he does a decent job. I remember first hearing Strawberry Fields Forever on the radio and thinking the drumming was the best I’ve ever heard.

I think Ringo is a weak singer in general, but he does have his moments. I love Boys and the way he makes it his own. You can hear how much fun he’s having there. No, scratch that, they all are. Also, on Act Naturally , his voice sounds rather good in the bits where Paul harmonises with him. I like how they used that song to kind of trick people. Paul’s background vocals are out of Ringo’s range but he changed his voice and accent to emulate Ringo, so that the less observant listener will think it’s good old Richie. A nice little joke on those who would put Ringo down, I think.

I think he’s a wonderful drummer. I look up to him a lot in that respect. With singing… He’s not bad, really. He’s just vastly outclassed by the other three. I think his voice is… Cute, for lack of a better word. I like it best when it sounds like he’s having fun and genuinely enjoying what he’s singing. I personally liked his performance in Boys quite a lot.

They put a kit in front of a firing squad and get told to get going on The End . The trick is to shout “Fire!” when they least expect it.
Ringo’s singing technique is average which is pretty good considering who he’s up against. But you hear who he is with every note, that’s special.

When Ringo stays within his limited range in specific genres he’s a good singer, if he leaves those or isn’t with it for the recording it can get pretty average very quickly. Anyone who says he cannot sing should listen to the ‘Beaucoups of Blues’ or ‘Ringo’ albums; you may not like the albums but Ringo is mighty fine on them.
The problem Ringo has is that he was in a group with three exceptional vocalists which severely highlights his more limited abilities. Plus his drumming is/was so damn brilliant the natural reaction is to want to hear him drum.

Or a dying Crofts either.
I love Ringo’s drumming overall, but his otherworldly efforts on ‘Rain ‘, ‘Tomorrow Never Knows ‘ and ‘Ticket To Ride ‘ are among my favorites.
