‘Back Off Boogaloo’ was a single released by Ringo Starr in 1972. It was co-written by Starr and George Harrison.
Well, I was great at writing two verses and a chorus – I’m still pretty good at that. Finishing songs is not my forte. I have written songs with 26 verses, ’cause I didn’t know how to end them! I started writing ‘Back Off Boogaloo’, then took it to George to help finish off. Same with ‘Photograph’ and ‘It Don’t Come Easy’.

I’m surprised there’s no thread for this song. It’s probably one of my favorite Ringo songs. I also quite like the 80’s rerecording on Stop And Smell The Roses with the Beatles medley in the back.

Did Ringo popularize the word Boogaloo? I’ve seen the word around a lot lately on TV and on the internet, and I also think of this Ringo song.
I also love the first version of this song, but not the second.

I understand it was a regular saying of Marc Bolan, who Ringo directed in the 1972 film ‘Born to Boogie’ and that was the germination of the song.

This is one of Ringo’s better songs, and George’s slide guitar is wicked.
But when I hear this, I can’t help but think of the “naughty” version the kids used to sing in the schoolyard back in the ’70s (replace the first B with a J). Does anyone else remember that? I doubt that it was a purely local thing.
