I’m doing some quick features on each of Ringo’s studio albums, currently up to 1977. Most of them seem to already have a forum thread, but this is the first one that didn’t.

This album is lovely.  Especially the last 3 songs.

The release five people were asking for: ‘Ringo The Fourth’ is getting another limited vinyl reissue on ‘RSD’. Orange and blue vinyl are due on 23rd April 2022 following red and gold which were out in 2020.

Surely you do red and blue together. Come on, this is basic Beatles!!!

A semi-popular YouTuber made a review of the album as part of his series called “Trainwreckords.” Note, you may not be like his tone or approach in reviewing the album, but there are some points to consider, especially because there ARE a lot of surveys that do call this not just Ringo’s worst album, but the worst of ALL Beatles solo albums.

I never knew about this one.  When I looked on the Discogs site to explore more Ringo a few months ago, this one completely escaped my notice.  The fact that many have apparently panned this album intrigues me to check it out, as I tend to try to avoid submitting blindly to the argumentum ad populum — whether it involves musical tastes, cuisine, or putative pandemics.

Well, I guess the Populum this time got it right!  I only mildly liked one song on this album — “Tango All Night”.

I find Drowning In The Sea Of Love to be an earworm, but that doesn’t necessarily make it good. I do find the original version of Wings perfectly fine, certainly not “lumpy” like the video review, but the 2012 version is infinitely better.

Hard to tell which was a bigger sign of Ringo’s commercial decline, this album or Bad Boy . After all, ditching disco was not an automatic sign of getting better. But of course, that meant that there would hardly be an audience for Stop and Smell the Roses (even if the full 70-minute version on the CD had been released with those additional tracks back in ’81), and Old Wave would never be released in America. Things wouldn’t really bounce back until after Ringo got sober. And it certainly shows. The boozehound period of his life wasn’t a particularly happy one.

How did the 2012 version of Wings come about?  Is it just a matter of tweaking the sound in the engineering studio using the same recording? It wasn’t re-recorded was it?  I agree, the 2012 version is actually likeable.

Actually, it was a full re-recording, as was the version of Step Lightly (and Ringo then got in the habit of doing re-recording sometime afterward. Plus, he’d already done the first re-recording of Back Off Boogaloo), and Ringo said he got the idea after hearing reggae, and that “I’ve always loved the sentiments of this song. So I’m glad we finally got it right.”

I’ll have to check out the re-recording of Step Lightly.  The only one I’ve heard is on the “Ringo” album — and to me, it’s perfect and there’s no need to re-record.
