Totally agree. At one time Ringo was massive and its an annoyance of mine that folk laugh off his entire career as if everything he released was dire and never made the top 100 of the charts.

From the article:
Once an artist is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they then become a voting member.
According to a Wiki article I looked up, only 50% of the voters need to approve a candidate for induction. It doesn’t seem like a high percentage. FWIW, by comparison, a candidate for the Baseball HOF requires at least 75%.
In any event, I’m glad at least half the voters love Ringo as much as we do!
Paul discusses Ringo’s induction briefly with John Stewart toward the end of this interview from Tuesday night’s episode of The Daily Show – thanks @parlance for alerting me to it. Paul will be at the ceremony once he finds out where it’s going to be.

It has to be noted that that 75% threshold means that nobody was inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. I think 50% right.

I would imagine it’s actually 50.1% rather than 50% (that there has to be a majority).
I actually think that’s probably right, as music is much more subjective than something like sports. With sports(wo)men career stats come into these things a lot. With music it’s never as simple as the stats, as often influence can far exceed general awareness of or sales. I can’t see, as an example, a group like The Velvet Underground (inducted in 1996) making it if they had to pass a 75% bar, despite their huge influence on certain areas of music.
You also have the bit where it’s quite easy to compare, using @Zig’s example, baseball players against each other, and come up with a list of the best exponents of the game that a large majority of those involved in the game can agree on. The scope of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is so wide that that’s impossible – how do you compare Metallica (inducted 2009) and Abba (2010), or Patti Smith (2007) and Donna Summer (2013)?
In that, I think a bare majority is fine – otherwise most years you wouldn’t get anyone that reached a 75% bar, and it would be the most anodyne list imaginable.
I do find Ringo’s entry rather insulting myself though. John, Paul and George are all proper inductees, in the main hall, where Ringo has been shunted off into the side-room of “Award for Musical Excellence”, which “honors those musicians, producers and others who have spent their careers out of the spotlight working with major artists on various parts of their recording and live careers”. Previously the category was called “Sidemen”.
Myself, I find that a rather major snub – All the others were good enough on their own for the proper Hall of Fame, and you’re the only one we don’t have on his own, so let’s find somewhere to put you so that you’re included but out of the way.
Here’s a little off-topic throwaway, who’s the only musician to have been inducted three times (as a member of two groups and solo)?

@Ron Nasty Clapton!
Which I indirectly mentioned upthread…
So I haven’t read anything about the induction yet, will as soon as I post this, but that really seems wrong that Ringo is categorized as a ‘Sideman.’ He was in no way ‘out of the spotlight,’ with The Beatles or solo. The way he tours proves that, he has different amazing, talented musicians with him every few years, and he’s still the main reason most people attend the concerts. Some members of his All-Star band were inductees in the hall of fame, and he’s at least on the same level as them. I can’t believe how underrated/under-respected Ringo continues to be…

While I’m happy to hear this, I’d hardly call Ringo’s solo career Hall of Fame-worthy (honestly, I’m not so sure about John’s or George’s, either [deflector shield up] ). On the other hand, he’s not being inducted as a performer like the other three, but rather as an Award for Musical Excellence recipient. Still, there are so many worthy acts who still haven’t been inducted: The Pretty Things, The Zombies, The Moody Blues, Manfred Mann, Them, The Spencer Davis Group, The Move, Badfinger, Love, ELP, ELO, Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Procol Harum, Supertramp, Family, Deep Purple, The Steve Miller Band, The Doobie Brothers, Chicago, Todd Rundgren, Ten Years After…

I couldn’t agree more! Other than his handful of hits, I can’t get into his music
If anything WINGS definitely should be in there. This would give Linda & Denny Lane a little credit. But what about poor Yoko!

Actually I think Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is a joke (same with grammys). But people obsesses over it so much that makes it super-important but anyways I am super-dooper happy for Ringo, finally he’s getting his reward for musical services. Now only thing which is left to be inducted in Hall is Wings, after that Paul will be a 3 times inductee along with clapton.

Good for Ringo! It’s nice to see he’s getting recognition. Of course his career isn’t a joke. He’s produced some lovely music. (Husbands and wives is one of my all time favourite songs!)
Anyone who’s upset by his induction too bad. Can’t do anything about it so just go with the flow, dudes!
I don’t like Lily Allen’s music but that doesn’t mean I demand she should stop releasing music. Life’s too short to dwell on the things that upset you right?

And here’s a review referenced in the Examiner.
Not being attuned to drumming, I didn’t realize that “play it like Ringo” had become a phrase in the drumming world – in which case Ringo’s getting the perfect award.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will honor the Beatles drummer with the “Award for Musical Excellence”. They’re getting this one right by enshrining Ringo the drummer, not Ringo the solo artist.
