Not my favorite drummer but I think he’s a wonderful drummer with a unique style, irreplaceable.
I like the little drum fill he does starting at about 3:49 of Sheila Escovedo’s cover of “Come Together ” (my link starts just a couple of seconds before):

Being a member of the greatest band makes him the best by default.

I love Ringo. He’s not a bad singer, and he’s a great musician. If I’d had him as a drummer, I would’ve been the Beatles, too. Maybe.

Personally I think there’s only one drummer better than Ringo, and it takes a jazz drummer to beat him – Tony Williams. Ringo is the ultimate session drummer – play anything, exactly how the songwriter wants it, perfectly every time, not being flash, but being innovative where given room to stretch out. Some of his drum patterns are unreal.

Ringo is great and unique. However my favorite non jazz drummers are Danny Seraphine of Chicago, and Michael Shrieve of Santana. There are about 100 songs over the years to measure their drum ability by, but I would start with listening to Happy ‘Cause I’m Going Home all the way through (it’s a long song) for Danny Seraphine, and maybe side one of the Santana album Welcome (skipping the very first song which doesn’t have any drums really). My favorite jazz drummer and drummer of all time is Joe Morello of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. |

Oh man, I wouldn’t disagree with Tony Williams as “best drummer ever”; the way he’d make time skip and jump and ho backwards and forward, fabulous stuff. (And a big teenage Beatles fan himself, incidentally…) I consider myself lucky to have gotten to see him play with his quintet in 1992.
