I guess this is the best thread to post how much I appreciate Ringo’s art, look at this, it’s just so, beautiful:

chef-alamode.jpgImage Enlarger

Chef Alamode is the most marvelous thing since boys were discovered.

big-h-small-heads.jpgImage Enlarger

This one is going to haunt my dreams forever.

peace-forest.jpgImage Enlarger

Is there anything cuter than Russian dancers in a forest with giant ants and a frog (?) head? Ok, maybe Chef Alamode is cuter.

The Elaphant Foot, how do I even begin to explain The Elaphant Foot? It’s just so, perfect, meaningful, *searches synonyms for beautiful*, magnificent, delightful, splendid, wonderful, stunning, fascinating, gorgeous, shocking, lovely, terrific, graceful, phenomenal, amazing, impressive, remarkable, spectacular, charming, brilliant, glorious, fab, sublime, outstanding, heavenly, breathtaking, astonishing, thrilling, overwhelming, marvelous, extraordinary, pulchritudinous and exquisite. Ever since I first saw it my life hasn’t been the same.

Now I better delete all these monstrosities from my computer before it gets haunted by the spirits of Ringo’s MS Paint drawings-

Speaking of Ringo’s art, I own one of the drum heads he did. I won it in a drawing the Hard Rock was doing last time I saw him there. And that is his real signature, there was a beer and wine reception where he signed things for people. I got into that by winning the drum head. Stood just inches away from him as he signed it. I said “I love you Ringo”, to which he turned to me, smiled and said “you’re a doll.” OMG!! *heart flutters* I love him dear.Image Enlarger

Finally! Somebody who appreciates Richard’s art as much as I do.heart

I got my ceramics teacher to look at his art website because his art was an inspiration for one of my ceramics projects, but she called his art “infantile,” and really, so has everybody else that I’ve showed his art to.

I watched a 1981 interview with Ringo on The Tomorrow Show today and he wasn’t drunk or wearing shades. It was a good interview (around the release of Caveman and Stop and Smell the Roses).

That Jonathan Ross clip from the original post was very funny. Loved how he tried asking for Ringo’s number, multiple times, to no avail. I respect his decision not to carry it much or give out his number, I wish I didn’t have to depend so much on my phone >.<

The correct term is “naive art” and your teacher is a fool (not allowed on the hill, that’s for good fools). I haven’t seen Ringo art, I knew he did some/ It’s charming and reminds me strongly of Spike Milligan’s art.

It’s #8 that gets to the point for me. It isn’t something you can learn, it’s about your intuition. This is why #5 too, it’s not about playing drums, it’s about the song. And that leads to #11 because John and George would rather play with a friend than get a dozen good session drummers. Paul was more independent than this, which is not a bad thing, just different.

Out of fear that the article SG linked to in post 42 might go away, here it is:

As a bass player, I naturally work closely with the drummers in the various bands I have played in. In no band have I had to work more closely with the drummer than in Beatle Tracks and our most excellent drummer, Bill Betz. And why is that? Because it is Beatles music that we are playing. Among all the uncanny magic that the Beatles created, the top notch rhythm section of Paul McCartney on bass and Ringo Starr on drums cannot be overlooked or underestimated. Ask any drummer, young or old and they will tell you the same thing: Ringo was the bomb. Ringo created his own unique innovations that only enhanced an established Super-Group. As far as this correspondant is c0ncerned, Ringo was among the best-ever. Still, we hear the casual comments like, “Ringo was an everyman,” “He was just happy to be there,” “Any drummer would have fit it,” and other assorted uninformed drek. I came across an article by a guy named John Bryant on why Ringo was so great. I agree with all of it and to give Mr. Bryant his due, I mention him in this blog. Here now, a discussion on one half of the greatest rhythm section in Rock History:
1) First and foremost, Ringo had no big ego issues. While it is true that if you are as good as John and Paul were, ego isssues are somewhat acceptable. It was the emergence of George Harrison later in the Beatles recording career that became one of the fatal weights on the dynamics of the band. George felt slighted by John and Paul because his writing material was getting better and better and they didn’t want to hear about it most of the time. Still, throughout it all, Ringo remained low key Ringo. It is my contention that had they had one more ego trip/bruise at the time (1968), it would have been over BEFORE the “White Album ” came out. That situation alone makes a great case for Ringo Starr . Now, let’s move onto more playing issues.

2) Ringo was left handed. Yet, he set his drum set up for a right handed drummer. That together with his “matched” grip of holding both sticks like a fly swatter made for a comepletely unique sound. The “matched” grip was seldom done before Ringo but became the standard thereafter. Ringo was known for heavy use of his tom-toms and the matched grip facilitated that sound nicely.

3) Have you listened to Anthology 1 yet? Pete Best plays on a number of those tunes. Best also played on a lot of the Beatles numbers on the “Beatles at the BBC” collection. Then compare to Ringo. Is there really any doubt as to who the far better drummer was??

4) Ringo worked closely with engineers Norman “Normal” Smith and shortly thereafter, Geoff Emerick in the Abbey Road Studios. With these stellar engineers, he started creating a singularly unique sound that became widely emmulated in rock: he tuned the drums lower and with Emerick close microphoning each drum in his kit with other sound “deadening” material, the Ringo sound was born. Practially every drummer since then owes a debt to Ringo for it.

5) Ringo never overplayed. NEVER! Some have critisized him for it. I say he should have been knighted for it.

6) Ringo had a facility to play odd and unusual time signatures with ease. This pushed rock into uncharted territories heretofore unknown. For example, the 7/4 timing of “All You Need Is Love ,” or the frequent time signature changes in “Here Comes The Sun .” He also knew when less was more; take “Norwegian Wood ” for example. He used a small tamborine and nothing else for that. Ditto “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away .” Timing changes were present in his own signature song, “With A Little Help From My Friends .”

7) Ringo had a proficiency in numerous and different styles of music; hard rockers (RAIN), ballads, (Something ), Country (What Goes On ), Calypso (Ob-La-Di,Ob-La-Da) and of course, beautiful Pop (Nowhere Man ). He did it all. This ability was a great advantage to superior song writers like John Lennon , Paul McCartney and George Harrison .

8) Ringo was known to feel a song as opposed to playing it. Any musician will tell you that. His uncanny ability to feel a song, which may or may not have required some tempo changes in a particular song, were always appropriate. No one had a better feel for songs than Ringo.

9) The urban legend that Ringo was the luckiest man alive and just happened to fall into the Beatles one day is false. The Beatles expressely wanted Ringo. He was the best drummer in Liverpool and everyone knew it. John, Paul and George felt lucky to have been able to get Ringo in the first place. Add to that, George Martin’s displeasure with Pete Best during the Beatles’ audition at Abbey Road on June 6, 1962. Martin flat out said, “Get rid of that drummer.” That was the straw that broke the camel’s back. The Beatles got Ringo in August, 1962. Pete Best was sacked on August 16, Ringo started with the fabs on August 18 and the rest is history.

10) There were rumors that persist to this day the Ringo was so mocked by his own bandmates and that Paul redid drumming tracks behind Ringo’s back. Not true. Paul McCartney indeed played drums on three Beatles’s tracks as follows: 1) Back In The USSR : because Ringo had just quit the White Album sessions. 2) Dear Prudence : same thing, it was while Ringo temporarily quite the Beatles in August 1968 during the White Album . 3) Ballad of John & Yoko: Ringo was out of the country filming his first movie: “The Magic Christian.”

11) There were four GREAT solo albums by the Beatles after they broke up. Many LPs were recorded but by wide consensus including your humble correspondant, only four GREAT albums by the solo fabs. They were, in no particular order:
1) All Things Must Pass George Harrison *triple LP
2) Plastic One Band – John Lennon
3) Imagine John Lennon
4) Band On The Run Paul McCartney

Guess how many of these albums Ringo played on?? The first three. This, after all the acrimony, heartaches, breakup and bad feelings between all the Beatles in 1970. Ringo was the drummer of choice for John and George. Paul, not surprisingly, played the drums himself on his own best solo effort. The first three listed here are considered the best of the this short list by far.

Ringo was the glue that held the Beatles together far longer than they would have otherwise. The unsung hero of this band to be sure. And a great drummer by any standard. Go and listen to him again now and savor the sound.

Is it me or does he just sound like he’s smiling while singing a lot of his songs, even if it’s not visible? =)

That’s the vibe I get, anyways. He’s such a warm, happy go lucky guy with a big heart and I’d love to give him a hug. a-hard-days-night-ringo-10

I hope to have another Beatles fan-art to show by the weekend. Maybe Ringo doing his drumming thing. (insert drum kit smiley here)

^^Yes.

Ringo’s drumming makes me smile because it’s so spot-on and happy; even in sad songs it’s still fabulously spot-on so I still get a kick (drum?) out of it. ahdn_ringo_09

Actually everything about Ringo makes me smile… and most drummers, period, make me smile as well… I heart drummers. a-hard-days-night-ringo-10

Don’t know if this has been seen by many on here yet, but I found it a while back. Ringo’s obviously loving it as they’re doing Long Tall Sally near the end. Especially at the 10:30 mark =D Then again, the entire video is full of awesomeness from all 4 of them.

(Poor John and his faulty mic stand, though!)

You’re very welcome! The YouTube comment “Ringo enables god mode” made me giggle.

There is another video where they are playing at Washington Coliseum where he gets candy thrown at his head (6:00 in) and he ducks. Doesn’t throw him off one bit! All in all, very fun to watch. At several points it looked like his wobbly platform thing was going to fall over! He might as well have been sitting on a trampoline…

I wonder if the girl with the mic at 5:44 could hear any of The Beatles music on her recording. I wonder if she still has the recording.
