Book Excerpt: Ringo Starr Realizes a Dream With His 1970 Country Album
Read an excerpt from ‘Still the Greatest: The Essential Songs of the Beatles’ Solo Careers’

Ringo Starr had always loved country and western music. Back in 1959, he had joined an English group called The Raving Texans. He took the stage name Ringo not only because of the rings he wore, but also in honor of “Johnny Ringo,” a real life cowboy involved in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

Still the Greatest is awesome. It has a ton of new information that I hadn’t heard before, despite me going into it thinking that it was going to be a book of pure speculation.

How long was Ringo in the hospital for when he was younger?
From my memory, he had appendicitis, where his appendix burst which then turned into peritonitis which put him in a 10 week coma. Elsie was told a couple of times to prepare for the fact that he might not survive. He thankfully came around and was there six months. BUT he fell out of the bed which caused him to have to stay another six months. So nearly a year or just over a year?

What happened to him when he fell out of his bed to result in another 6 months in hospital?
From Tune In; page 45:
He was restricted to a cot with high sides, to allow his surgical scars to heal, so it was a time of utter, numbing boredom; there was simply nothing to do. […] The nurses’ instruction –don’t move– held good until the day Richy wanted to show a boy in the next bed a toy bus he’d been given. As he leaned to pick it up, he overbalanced, fell out of the cot and ripped his stitches open, setting back his recovery a few months.
I hope I did well.

Can Ringo write with both hands?
I think I read somewhere that Ringo is naturally left handed, but his grandmother taught him to write with his right hand when he was a boy. And his playing a right handed kit as a left handed drummer is what helped him develop his style.

Wonder if he can write with his left hand. I think one interview he said he has trouble writing with his left hand since he used his right hand to write often.

Is there a meaning behind Ringo’s Twitter avatar?

It is part of the “We Are Not Afraid” twitter campaign against terrorism, @SgtPeppersBulldog. As can be seen on its header, Ringo’s photo for the campaign to not let terrorists change the way we live and our values is on the right-hand side by the D.

So it is. Thanks, @Ahhh Girl, I’ve just had another listen and heard it. Another thing I used to think he was saying was “This song is dedicated to Sarah” or something along those lines!
