@AppleScruffJunior: I hear as much George solo songs as John solo songs on the radio though. There might be some truth in the fact John is thought so highly of because of the way he died though. I think it’s also partially because he was more in the public eye, with his controversial statements and all. George was more private I think.
I do think the fact Ringo isn’t in the hall of fame for his solo career is ridiculous. What’s more, he hasn’t even been nominated to be in it yet!

Why should Ringo be in the hall of fame for his solo career? Just because he’s a Beatle? I don’t think his solo work is all too incredible. I love Photograph (his compilation album), but I don’t find his albums to be very consistently good. Good Night Vienna is the only exception for me.

Based on solo work alone is Johns solo catalogue all that remarkable based on music alone? Aside from Plastic Ono Band and Imagine none of the others are great bodies of work or that well known. Same can be said for George’s with the standout being All Things Must Pass . The same can be applied to Ringo, Ringo (the LP) was massive back in ’73 (its also a damn fine album) Goodnight Vienna was also incredibly successfully. If anything Ringo did better success-wise than John ever did before he died. George had the early 70’s up to 1974 when Dark Horse and the US tour was disastrous and things began to fall apart.
If anything, based on all of that Wings should be in giving Paul his third entry.
So I presume that its other factors that get added in (charity work, status, Johns murder, influence, legacy etc) when decisions are made and votes are cast.
What are the factors that get you in?

I’m back from Ringo’s celebration, and the best of my cell phone photos are up at Instagram: 1 2 3 4 5
I got there a bit too late to get a good picture-taking spot. If anything decent came from my DSLR, I’ll share. I know I caught a couple of Ringo doing the peace sign, but since I wasn’t right up front, by the time you zoom in, they’re a bit crap. But that’s okay, I just wanted to be a part of it all. The first guy in line got there the night before, and the second person got there at 4am. There was no way.
The ceremony started a few minutes before noon. Don Was introduced John Varvatos, who introduced Ringo. There were a few jokes about John Varvatos finally turning Ringo into a male model. Then Ringo had us do a test-run of the peace-and-love moment we would do at noon. And then David Lynch said a few words about the initiative to raise money for bring Transcendental Meditation to “at-risk” children and adults.
At noon, we all held up the peace sign, then Ringo posed for selfies with his onstage guests. I think after that we were lead in singing happy birthday to Ringo. Then things got wacky. The cupcakes were brought out, and then Ringo and a couple of other people started tossing out rubber bracelets – white ones that said Peace and Love and black ones that said #peacerocks . I couldn’t get photos of Ringo tossing them for all the people jumping in front of me trying to catch one (and, yes, I got one). But I did watch him for a bit. And that was my favorite moment because, as someone once pointed out, Ringo once had this reputation as being this fun, wild guy, and now he’s more and laid-back, and as he ran around with a big smile, it seemed we got a little glimpse of the gleeful kid still inside.
It was brief but fun. How many times do you get to sing Happy birthday to a Beatle in the flesh?

Thanks for the report Parlance.Did you manage to get a bracelet yourself?
I did! That’s the one in the photo. And I think it’s one that was thrown out by the man himself.

Cool. Must be good having a memento of the occasion. Did you eat the cupcake or will you be freezing it for keeping as well (some folk do do such things, i recall someone still having a slice of Paul’s birthday cake from back in the 60’s)?

Ugh, I thought of that cake slice as I watched other people carefully put their cupcakes away. No, I didn’t keep mine, I just wanted the picture. Then I ate it (a delicious chocolate-flavored one from a place called Magnolia Bakery).
