Drummer here. Was listening to isolated drum track and I have to say, the “double bass” sounds mighty like a floor tom. Most of the time in the song Ringo hits the bass and snare together making it hard to pick out an exact tone, however there are a couple points where he crashes the cymbal and you can clearly hear the low, soft attack of the bass drum. All the sections with “double bass” have a very sharp attack, much like the sound achieved from putting a towel on a tom (in this case the floor tom) which of course Ringo is famous for doing. Now maybe Paul didn’t play live with Ringo on that take, but it could have been overdubbed by Ringo or Paul.
A cool note: There is a picture from the White Album sessions, I think, where Ringo has his black oyster bass drum set up with his maple kit making it double bass, however I don’t think this setup was ever used on a recording, most likely he was messing around in the studio.

That’s interesting. Another drummer here.
You can also hear the kick in some places where he adds in an extra quaver of kick for variation, and it sounds the same as the rapid kicks.
Though a floor tom with tea towels would sound similar, i agree. Perhaps you’re right.
