What does everyone think about this? Ringo Starr's Liverpool birthplace in new threat. It makes me sad, but I don't have a solution. Ugh, city planners. I've yet to hear a good plan from these planners.

If the neighborhood is truly in a state of disrepair, new homes make sense.
At the same time, tell me there isn't something they can do to keep Ringo's childhood home intact by building around it. It is done all the time.
I'm quite surprised that it is not already a protected landmark.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

I suppose it's cost prohibitive to restore all of them, but I don't see why they can't build around it. The National Trust bought Paul's and John's childhood homes…
Perhaps I'm not remembering this correctly, but he was born there, but then moved to another location when his dad left and his mom couldn't afford to stay, right? Which house do you preserve, and is the second home ok?

The NT would only buy it if they thought it was a significant asset to the nation. Now you could argue that Ringo's birthplace fell into that category, but there are thousands of notable people in British history and sometimes you have to draw the line.
According to the BBC story Skye posted earlier, Ringo lived there for three months before moving to Admiral Grove, where he stayed for about 20 years. That would be worth protecting, I think.
FYI, neither Forthlin Road or Menlove Avenue were Paul or John's birthplaces, nor the first houses they lived in.

Well as long as Admiral Grove is ok, I can live with it (what choice do I have?). But there's nothing interesting about new homes or condos.

In October, I went on a trip to see John and Paul's houses in Liverpool, and there was time at the end to see Madryn Street. I don't know if anyone else has seen, but there's quite a lot of graffiti on the now boarded-up door and windows. Someone has even written “Don't knock me down” (a play on “Don't let me down”).

Liverpool council has put metal grilles on all the windows in the condemned streets, but Ringo's has extra bits around the edges because apparently people kept chipping away at them.

Oh no! The first I heard of this was on the local news here (the weird thing is I live in Texas…) and I was M-A-D. Why do they have to do this? IT WILL RUIN MY TRIP TO LIVERPOOL WHERE I GO TO ALL THE BEATLE RELATED THINGS!

haha, I have to admit, that made me laugh. I mean, I saw that on the news when it was announced and I was like “I live in California… I'm on the other shining sea”. But what's happening to George's birthplace if John and Paul's are safe (for now)? And I thought that Ringo said that he didn't mind, either.
I salute the lady who screamed "I love you Paul!" at a tribute band's concert.

Ringo said in a interwiew:
Yes, I've heard the building will be teared, but it's OK.
Just so many memories.
And no Joe. It's not anthology. It's from my local newspaper, that he'll play in Norwegian Wood.

From the Liverpool Echo:
The government has stepped in to block Liverpool council’s plans to demolish and rebuild some of the houses in Welsh Streets.
Last year Liverpool leaders and anti-demolition campaigners gave evidence to an inquiry on whether Liverpool’s regeneration plans for the Welsh Streets – including a house where Beatle Ringo Starr once lived as young child – could be given the go-ahead.
But although the planning inspector recommended planning permission be given, the communities secretary Eric Pickles stepped in to block the proposals.

*dusts off topic* (I wasn’t here when this was “hot”.)
This has been raging on for years and I’ve been able to follow the story quite well on BBC North West news, as well as other sources. I’ve picked up the three main points:
-The NT refuse to buy both Ringo and George’s homes as they “are not looking to get a set of four.” They bought Mendips and Forthlin Road as they were where Lennon/McCartney worked together in the early days and were “relevant to the start of the Beatles.” More fool them though. People would pay to see Ringo and Georges homes too. (A tour company in Liverpool offer tailor made tours including a George Harrison and Ringo Starr tour so people pay to go and see these places.)
-The house in question is literally crumbling down. This argument has gone on so long the house is so dilapidated it’s beyond repair. Much like the rest of the houses on the street, it has succumbed to terrible damp (among other things). The only outcome of all of this, despite all the protesting and arguments is the house will just collapse.
-Ringo himself has said he does not care about the house. This makes sense as he moved out at such an early age and probably never went back. It doesn’t hold much significance for him. Yes he was literally born in the house but obviously he doesn’t remember it, and he barely remembers living there.

Revamped homes in Welsh Streets snapped up in 24 hours
Most applications came from locals and people who want to returnMerseysiders have been rushing to rent homes in the Welsh Streets , with a first phase of 24 properties going in a day.
Specialist North West developer Placefirst held an open weekend to showcase its pilot project of revamped Victorian terraced houses on High Park Street and Voelas Street, Toxteth .
Now it is preparing to release its next phase of properties, having promised an “exciting neighbourhood of contemporary family homes by completely transforming five streets of Victorian terraced houses”, retaining period features like high ceilings and big windows.
Meanwhile, Liverpool city council recently approved a £30m masterplan for the area, to include 294 homes – a mix of refurbishment and new build. A detailed planning application is expected to be submitted later this year.
Houses in the Welsh Streets were empty and tinned up for more than a decade during a long row about whether they should be demolished. And the controversy went global as one of the streets, Madryn Street, includes Ringo Starr ’s birthplace.
