Well, A and E lend themselves a a key very easily to guitar. Every chord is equally as easy on piano, but as most of their songs used guitars, A and E were the way to go. That’s my theory anyway…
E isn’t very common in modern popular music, @GardeningOctopus.

@The Hole Got Fixed every chord is not equally easy on piano especially when transition from other chords and incorporating inversions.
My brother and I were just talking about how in the early days they loved to use E, and bounce from a B7 to an F#7 for the middle eight.
It reminds me of Pauls story about the B7 from the anthology movies.

Bar chords always are the same fingering on every position. With piano, you’ve got to remember which parts of the scale are white keys and black keys. Guitar is much easier to learn the basic keys on because it is the same in every key.

Is there a reason for the Beatles using mostly A and E major? Are those more common in music anyways?
Probably because their vocal range did fit better within those tonalities.

Interesting question and one i’ve wondered about myself.
I think the main reason was because both keys fit their vocal ranges well but there are probably other reasons.
Lots of composers of all genres tend to have their ‘favourite’ key, simply because they either like the tonality of the key or they feel just comfortable composing with it.
I wouldn’t say E major and A major are uncommon in popular music but they’re definetely less common then C or G major. E major is less common then A major but still generally more common then the sharp/flat chords.
I don’t think the difficulty of playing chords played a factor in which key they chose, particularly on guitar. The Beatles were experienced musicians so that shouldn’t have held them back too much.

That was fantastic, thanks!Interesting how E major, the Beatles’ 2nd most common, is well below that on Spotify…
No worries, yeah that is pretty interesting!

Would someone be able to work up a list of all the songs the Beatles did in each key? At least put a viable straw man out there for a key and see if there is agreement?
Perhaps we could have a list of each Beatles lead vocal songs and which keys they are in.

Billy Joel and Elton John love to use F major. I see them going from Bb to F/A all the time. Paul does it in Maybe I’m Amazed as well. Rarely will a guitarist use the key of F.

I found this site very handy http://chartingthebeatles.com/#tonality . It’s really noticeable that their “middle period” is full of modal keys.
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

Something that most people don’t realize is that some songs have 2 keys, a real one and a played one because the guitar is being capo-ed or tuned differently. For example, Here Comes The Sun is in the key of A but since George put a capo on the 7th fret on his Gibson acoustic guitar, the song is being played in the key of D. Thinking about it, is I’ll Be Back in A major or A minor, the most mysterious key in music.
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

I’ve already made that entire list last year. I could post that now (in a spoiler) and then we could discuss any amendments that need to be made?

If you can edit post 1 in the thread, I suggest putting the list there for easy reference. If something needs to be changed, you (or a mod) can alter the list in that post so we always have the most current version in post 1.
