What’s the difference ?

Both 1987 Help ! & Rubber Soul stereo CDs were remixed by George Martin, as he wasn’t happy with the original ’65 stereo mixes.

How are the 2009 stereo CDs different than the 1987 stereo CD remix of these 2 albums.

What’s the difference ?

Apart from being remastered, @Bongo, no difference at all, as they stuck with GM’s 1987 remixes.

Remasters of the original 1965 stereo mixes were included as bonuses on each albums respective disc in the 2009 mono box set (but not the later vinyl mono remasters, which were completely new remasters).

@Ron Nasty , can you tell the differences between the ’65 & ’09 recordings of both CDs? Does one sound better than the other?

It’s mainly that the vocals on many of the tracks were more centred in the Martin remixes but there are some minimal differences in regards to levels/placement of instruments and I think a song or two is about a to a second half-second longer or shorter in the fade out.

Can you hear the difference between the two? Definitely. mmm is right that the biggest differences are often the vocal placement. There is also added digital reverb and echo on some tracks. One of the complaints most regularly made about the 1987 remixes is that they were done digitally, which means the 2009 remasters of the two are digital remasters of digital remixes.

Which sounds better? That’s really a case of personal preference. Myself, for some songs I go with the 1965 mixes, for others the 1987, and – to further complicate – there are others I go for the 1999 Yellow Submarine Songtrack mixes.

I’ll give a more detailed response on Friday when I’m back on my laptop.
