I’d forgotten what This Boy does at the outro, so while looking for it on YouTube I could not find the recorded version and only found one of their performances — .
Then after finding the recorded version and comparing, I find I much prefer what they did on that live show — instead of fading out, they hit that chord and just sang “This Boy …” holding it steady for a couple of seconds, without dipping down as they had done throughout the song. If recorded, they could have even enhanced their voices at that point perhaps with a slight echo effect. But I thought that was just where they were lip-synching to the record on television to promote the single? I listened to it, then to my Past Masters CD version, and they sound identical to me, even down to the mixing. Except that the vid is poorer sound quality.
You’re right, Silly Girl — I misheard that live performance ending the first time I heard it. But I still think they should have ended it the way I didn’t hear it but mistakenly thought it was! They should have sang: “This Boy …” and with the guitars hitting a last strum simultaneously with “Boy” and just hold the “Boy” for a few seconds “sostenuto” with a kind of echo effect — and not dipping down to a lower note like they do throughout the song.

That’s a proper live version, mmm, and very nice too. Poor John, he can’t quite make the note in the middle-eight.

Welcome, @The Hippie Chick. Can You Take Me Back is an interesting one. Is it the outro to Cry Baby Cry , the intro to Revolution 9 , or a hidden track in the same way that Her Majesty would be on Abbey Road ?
Many here go with hidden track since it was not recorded as part of either tracks it sits between. In our poll of their ’60s releases last year, it was treated as a separate entity and came in at joint 197th (along with Kansas City /Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey! and When I Get Home ).

Great point, and yeah, looking at it this way it does seem more like a little hidden track.

It always sounded like an outro to me. A very cool one, indeed.

I wanted to see what Joe said on this issue.
On the White Album , Cry Baby Cry was followed by Paul McCartney ‘s Can You Take Me Back, an ad-libbed song recorded during the 16 September session session for I Will . Although unrelated to Cry Baby Cry , the songs are often classed as one.
I suppose that makes Can You Take Me Back an outro in Joe’s thinking. He doesn’t have a separate song age for it.

I don’t think you can make that inference about @Joe’s thinking at all, @Ahhh Girl. I, for one, read it completely differently because of the last line. He says it is unrelated to Cry Baby Cry , and acknowledges the two get lumped together. That, to me, seems to suggest he sees them as separate items.
The lack of song page means nothing, Joe doesn’t have song pages for any of the songs making their debut on Let It Be … Naked’s Fly on the Wall, with the exception of Child Of Nature .
As Joe will always admit, there’s not enough time to write every page he wants to or could.

IMO, personally, i always remember the ending of ‘Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby ‘ as well as ‘Like Dreamers Do , from the guitars. They arent my favorite songs, but they are much better than other endings in good songs. For drum outro, ‘Thank You Girl ‘.

Cool that you mention drum outros. From their early stuff I like the “there’s a place” one.
