When did Paul learn to play drums?

I was thinking about Paul’s overall musical talent earlier (as one does) when I started to think about his drumming. While not Ringo, he’s an obviously talented drummer. The question then dawned on me, ‘When did he learn to play?’

During the early days, they needed a bassist, Paul got stuck in that position. But weren’t they also in need of a drummer for a period before Pete? Why didn’t Paul get put on the drums? Did he know how to play yet?

If he didn’t learn early, was it the years in the studio? Did he just pick it up while messing around with a drum set one day since he’s extremely musically inclined? Was he taught by someone?

If anyone has speculation or answers, (I don’t know, maybe it’s a common fact I’ve somehow missed,) please post!

If I spoke prose you'd all find out, I don't know what I talk about.

Paul cobbled together a drum kit in 1958 in the hope of bringing brother Mike into the band to solve their drummer problems. Unfortunately for Paul’s plans, Mike wasn’t too good because he had a weak arm after breaking it the previous year. Paul started teaching himself to play on that kit.

I was hoping you’d come along! You’ve always got the answers! apple01

I feel like that was resolved too quickly, so I guess this could become discussion about Paul’s drumming because I didn’t see a topic just for that.

So he was playing a bit in Hamburg!

Edit: And its “luck or fate” Mike hurt his arm, because there might have been no Ringo and no Beatles as we know them! paul-mccartney

@Mr. Kite

What do you think of moving it here? I see a few more threads on the idea of Paul’s drumming that I might could pull together.

Moving what? The post you mentioned in post 4? Sounds good as it’ll all be in one relevant place.

Clear as mud, I was. I was thinking about moving the relevant posts in this thread (all the ones that really deal with Paul’s drumming) to that other thread and deleting these “should we” posts.

Any thoughts on pulling all the Paul’s drumming threads that I’ve linked to together?

That makes more sense, and I see no reason not to if it’ll be better organized.

You don’t think that Paul would of given up drumming when Ringo takes over? Cause in the back behind the drums he wouldn’t be able to stand in front of the crowd and sing

That was my thought, but if Paul was drumming, they wouldn’t have been looking for a drummer meaning Ringo probably wouldn’t have taken over for him. Maybe Rory Storm and the Hurricanes would have worldwide success and this would be the Storm Bible! paul-mccartney

But we’d still have Ringo! a-hard-days-night-ringo-10ahdn_ringo_09

The Beatles would have broken up in 1968 if it wasn’t for Ringo. He’s the only member nobody had problems with, and if he hadn’t returned to them during the White Album , they wouldn’t have made it.
