Another thread reminded me of this. I have tried to figure this out but have had no luck, does anybody know when he gave them up? I know he gave up pot last year, because of shared custody raising his little one that he had with “she that will not be named”.
My guess would be late 80’s, early 90’s. I’m totally glad he quit, but man did he make it look good.

I don’t know if or when Paul quit cigarettes; but this reminds me of a question I posted years ago at the “Macca” website — full of hardcore McCartney fans, and nobody knew the answer. What brand of cigar is pictured on the back cover of the Band On The Run album? (it’s the half-smoked cigar next to the cup of half-drunk hot chocolate):
Faded flowers, wait in a jar, till the evening is complete... complete... complete... complete...

Paul suffered some sort of attack in Africa while recording Band On The Run (Linda thought he was having a heart attack) that was revealed to have been brought on by chain smoking. This is detailed in Geoff Emerick’s love let… uh.. book Here, There And Everywhere . From that point on, he cut back more and more, quitting completely by the early 1980s…
…quitting tobacco, at least.

I heard a story that he quit sometime in the early 80’s after one of his children was injured and he had to run a long ways to get help and that is when he decided to stop and change his life regarding cigarettes.
This actually sounds very familiar. Could have been a combination of reasons I suppose.

And I read that he stopped smoking weed altogether in the late 2000s as part of the custody agreement with mistake/wife #2 in order to get joint custody of Beatrice.

Oh that was the reason? Well, that makes more sense than the official one he was giving about wanting to be more present for the rearing of his kid. It made me wonder how his older children felt about that.

I’m pretty sure the weed-stopping was in the Rolling Stone interview from last summer (haven’t read it in a while):

He gave the official reason, not the custody one:
McCartney says he’s quit pot altogether, after many years and many inconvenient busts – most notably in Japan, when he famously ended up in jail for nine days. “I did a lot, and it was enough,” he says. “I smoked my share. When you’re bringing up a youngster, your sense of responsibility does kick in, if you’re lucky, at some point. Enough’s enough – you just don’t seem to think it’s necessary.”

Yes, that’s right, now I remember. I did read somewhere else he mentioned the custody reason as well, though…I’ll try to find that link.

I was enjoying reading that up to the point he called Let ‘Em In a throwaway and I went damn dude, you just blew it. You called a song Paul wrote about all the people he loves and accepts a throwaway and he won’t let you interview him again. You had so many actual throwaways to choose and you chose that
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

Around 1988 I asked guitarist Mick Green if Paul still smoked (he had just played on the “Russian Album”), as I hadn’t seen photos of him with a ciggie for a while. He said “no”, then smiled and said “depends what type of ciggie….”
