I don’t really think it’s as simple as that, and I believe Paul has often expressed as much. He has said before that in wanting Stu out he was thinking about the band, and was sometimes unnecessarily harsh towards Stu, and he has also said – no matter how important a player of the instrument he went on to become – the last thing he wanted was to be the bass player, but John and George refused to take over on the instrument. So while he felt the band was stronger with Stu no longer on bass, he hadn’t planned on himself having to take on the instrument. You have to take into account that the bass was not considered a star instrument on which you could show off your prowess as a musician at that time.
And of course Paul had no idea (nor could he have) that HE would be the one who would make bass playing seem cool. For an instrument he didn’t care for, he sure revolutionized how the bass could be played (same could be said for one of Paul’s heroes, James Jamerson) and he still plays the bass at his shows today, even though by now he doesn’t have if he doesn’t want to.

Actually, John’s sexuality doesn’t make a hill-of-beans of difference to me. I just like him no matter what.
But, I would go behind sky090909’s proposed closed door to find out if Paul has been stating the real answer all along for all of you so we can put that thread to rest.

And one is about Paul and John…the truth about the truth. I guess it is cuz I am hoping someday that Paul will come to his senses and marry me (I’m not crazy…just obsessed)…Another is does he dye his hair? I was wondering the same thing about the dentures! I was just afraid to post it. Something about his teeth is different from before.

And most tellingly, Paul was letting himself go gray in the 80s/early 90s until he decided against it.
I read that Paul was dying his hair black as early as ’69, but I haven’t seen a confirmation of that elsewhere.
My favorite line about his hair color is still our own forum member’s Ben Ramon’s “violent shade of chestnut.”
As for how he keeps it so thick, I’ve suggested surgical assistance.
