Its like being caught in an Old Firm argument; “but they did that so why stop?”
Can everyone leave the pro or anti Yoko to-ing and fro-ing for just the Yoko Ono thread. Take it there or go PM and get it over with. Theres no reason on earth why this thread should have descended into more of it.

Freda ego, now, do it do it do it do it do it do it now. Or to put it more succinctly from an old Aussie band I love:
It’s pretty much unavoidable in the music business especially if you make it big. Noone is surprised that Prince lives on his own planet, so why the most successful songwriter on the planet has to have his motives ascribed to ego when by and large he tends to make the right decisions for himself (and good for him) I can only explain by recourse to journalistic catch-all because they can’t get an interview to ask inane questions . We can be fascinated by the Tug Of War he’s had with his former bandmates over the years without making it a permanent part of his personality surely? Like I said when I joined here, I’ve been a Johnnist and a Paullist and these days I’m leaning to Georgeist (and I’ve always been Ringoist), and its all a bit silly to me, but it seems to be a “larval stage” of Beatle fandom that everyone has to grow out of.
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

I’ve got this friend who’s always fussing about his feng shway, his environment, and what people are doing around him. So, one example, we were over at his girlfriend’s home and we spontaneously decided to have a snack at the dining room table — my friend, his girlfriend, her daughter, and me. Instead of just chilling and helping his girlfriend maybe get some of the food items and setting them out on the table where we could just sit and enjoy the food and convo uneventfully, unceremoniously and unremarkably, my friend started fussing with the placement of the chairs, the items on the table-top, telling people which chairs to sit in, fussing with the blinds to let the sunlight in, etc. — until the daughter (about 13 at the time) said, with that wonderful simplicity & candor children are good at:
“Stefan, why are you so BOSSY…?”
I just have a feeling that Paul is this way (like my friend) in myriad small, medium, and perhaps large ways.
If so, of course, it wouldn’t necessarily mean his ego is “massive” — but it might explain why he tends to behave in ways that may make people think it is…

If I was Paul McCartney I’d have a massive ego too. He’s said in the past that sometimes he stops and thinks, “Holy crap, I’m Paul McCartney ,” like all this talent, acclaim, good fortune, fame and money came to him. He wasn’t just a successful singer-songwriter: he eclipsed just about everyone else around. You couldn’t dwell on it too much or you’d go bananas.
Some performers nowadays are groomed for stardom from a young age but it’s not like he was destined to do this – he lucked out in a big way, worked very hard and reaped the rewards. Along the way he’s become elevated to a position where he can work with whoever he wants, live anywhere he wants, and do whatever he wants. I hear he’s not really used to people saying no to him, which might be a bit of a problem but is hardly surprising.
I also know one of his daughters once looked at him and asked: “Dad, are you Paul McCartney ?” To her he was just Dad, but to her teachers, friends and their parents he was a whole different entity. I think John Lennon also spoke about Sean asking about The Beatles after watching Yellow Submarine – “Dad, were you a Beatle?” It must be hard to stay normal when everyone else has their expected version of you, and you’re always fighting to stay true to yourself in public and private.
I’ve only met McCartney briefly, and can’t claim to know him, so I don’t know if he really does have a huge ego. It barely matters to me as it doesn’t encroach upon the music. I find the way people get emotionally invested in the various character traits of The Beatles* quite peculiar. Unless you know someone, or their personality starts overshadowing their output, who cares about their quirks? None of us is perfect so I prefer to let it be.
*and yes, their wives too, but that really isn’t relevant to this discussion. Thanks to those who kept this on-topic.

Going with the idea that Paul expresses himself in his music…
These lines say “massive ego”.
“If I’m wrong I’m right.” (Fixing A Hole )
“I can’t get over myself…” (Hands of Love)
Those who say he has a massive ego are really just secretly jealous of him, perhaps. Also, some people may be confusing some of his sheer, sexy animal magnetism with ego (er, or is that just me?).

On a slightly more serious note, Paul’s seems to be aware of the effect his personality has on people. I came across a rather interesting interview yesterday, in which he was quite candid about some of the things that went on in the pre- and post-breakup period. I don’t know if anyone’s ever posted a link to said interview before, but I thought it was really good to hear him reflect on those days and the role he played in it (even if it’s from his POV).
It’s apparently an LP, and a damaged one at that, but most of the interview is audible.

To be fair he has basically been told how talented and handsome he is since he was a young lad, from number one records to hordes of screaming fangirls, being the “cute” Beatle and still successful 50 years later-selling out shows in minutes.
I’d be more shocked if he didn’t have a bit of an ego.

And yet, he apparently still fears people won’t want to work with him, won’t like him, or won’t even know who he is. That’s not a fear people with an overinflated ego would have. I don’t think he’s quite as modest as he wants people to think, but he doesn’t seem too arrogant.

Pauls ego has always been considerable i would say – from the moment he met john. Behind that mask of down to earth insouciance that he has always projected lies the heart of a real power tripper. And fair enough you might say, he kept the beatles moving forward, he led the band when lennon opted for drugs and he was by far the best musician in the band. He was the beatles de facto manager and prime mover.
However i thought the ‘anthology’ documentary gave a decent insight into why that must be so hard for others to be around for such a long period of time. Especially in a high pressure environment like the beatles. His ego and dominating personality was evident and no matter how he tried to make it look like a more democratic thing you could tell it was really about him. I really felt for harrison in particular who i think bore the brunt of it. On more than one occasion on ‘anthology’ when they are together i thought he was warming to the idea of strangling him.
I’m sure the others were not lacking in ego either, don’t get me wrong. But john at least had great humour and self-deprecation, and george an endearing kind of sarcasm whilst ringo’s affable clowning all at least helped take the edge off it. With paul it’s always just there if you know what i mean?

If John had been there Paul wouldnt have been so overbearing at times and bugged George as he did. Paul generally feels (in my opinion) he has to take the load, begins to try too hard and can get end up getting on folks nerves.
