What are some good sources if I’m wanting to get into Paul’s relationship with Brian on a granular level? Something that doesn’t oversimplify these very complicated and interesting people would be best. I found that strange “tough love” 4 page letter Paul wrote to Brian when he was going through a depression, and I know the coming to the first meeting late because he was taking a bath story. I’ve read Brian’s quotes from the Hunter Davies bio. I’m having a hard time finding more. Does anyone know if Vivek Tiwary’s book delves into it a bit?

I’ve always felt that pauls relationship with brian was pretty good on the whole. Paul would have seen brian as an ally to keeping John and George on board with whatever project was coming up because brian was extremely good at keeping their individual and collective ego’s satisfied. That was really his prime role as the beatles manager because with respect he wasn’t the greatest of businessmen and repeatedly failed to get good deals for the group. (the beatles found this out themselves only after his death which shows you the huge trust they placed in him, but McCartney was apparently suspicious)
With brian succumbing to drugs and depression following the bands retreat from touring McCartney was becoming more and more the bands manager, but yet even right up to the end of brians life paul tried to keep him close. Probably because he felt threatened by his closeness to lennon, but also perhaps because he represented unity – not something I’d imagine he would throw away lightly especially with john and George becoming more disillusioned with the band around 67.
It’s certainly an interesting topic.

Hi there folks!
I was wondering if you could help me with a dissertation project I’m currently working on. I’m trying to piece together the life and times of Brian Epstein and I am currently stumped on the relationship that Brian and Paul held. I’m not interested in all the tabloid nonsense about Brian sending him love letters just as they claimed with John Lennon to sell a few new stories. If there are any books/documentaries or letters that you know of that could help me out, please send them my way!
Regards,
Tom Knight
