From clickgreen.co.uk:
Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney has co-signed a petition with more than 150 other famous names calling on the Government to immediately suspend the UK’s fracking drive.
The 166-word letter, published today in The Times, describes how the dash to extract shale gas has the potential to “leave a damaging environmental legacy for future generations”.
It signals the start of a new “We Need To Talk About Fracking” campaign, which already has the support of a list of celebrities, scientists, politicians and lawyers.
As well as Sir Paul McCartney , the other 161 signatories of the letter include Bianca Jagger, Yoko Ono, Russell Brand, Jude Law, Michael Mansfield QC, Tracey Emin and Helena Bonham Carter.

From The Mirror:
Tortured elephant who won heart of Paul McCartney FREED after 2 year court battle
Thirteen-year-old Sunder is now on his way to an elephant reserve in a truck – but even that has an escort as it is feared a gang on motorcycles want to recapture him
A tortured elephant who won the heart of Sir Paul McCartney has been freed after a court battle lasting two years, reports the Sunday People.
Thirteen-year-old Sunder is now on his way to an elephant reserve in a truck – but even that has a police escort as it is feared a gang on motorcycles want to recapture him.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had to take their battle to free him to the Indian Supreme Court. Peta’s Mimi Bekhechi said: “Sunder has known only cruelty, misery and neglect.
“We’re absolutely thrilled that Sunder will soon be able to roam and be in the company of other elephants.”
In 2012 the Sunday People exposed the gentle giant’s plight as he was locked in a shed in the Jyotiba Temple complex, where he was kept to “bless” visitors.
He had been blinded in one eye by a metal spike wielded by his young keeper (a mahout) and was covered in scars.
The chains held him so tight he could barely walk and they cut wounds in his legs.
His plight moved Sir Paul to write to the Indian government.
He said: “Years of his life have been ruined by abusing him. Enough is enough.”
Sunder had been donated to the temple outside Kolhapur, Maharashtra, by powerful politician Vinay Kore in 2007.
Peta won a campaign to get the forestry department to free him – but they refused.
It was only when Peta took the case to India’s Supreme Court last month that the forestry department caved in.
Even then a gang tried to stop Sunder being loaded on to a truck. Now he is on his way to safety in Bangalore.

Ooops, the BBC has Paul turning 77 this year. Get it right, people.

Masks for Macca 12:23:
It’s Sir Paul McCartney ‘s 77nd birthday on Wednesday and a group of campaigners will be marking the occasion with an unusual event.
Members of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals group (PETA) will gather wearing Paul McCartney masks outside The Cavern Club tomorrow.
Associate director Mimi Bekhechi said: “We’re sure Paul will be delighted that we’ve chosen to honour his birthday by encouraging the public to give vegetarianism a try.”

This isn’t really about Paul’s activism, but I thought it might fit in here. I don’t really like PETA’s policies for various reasons (chiefly their kill policy – warning: link contains upsetting images), but here it is anyway:
Bunch of nutters storm Mathew St in Paul McCartney masks
THIS week marks Paul McCartney ‘s 72nd birthday, and what better way to celebrate than by sending a flash mob of masked avengers to Liverpool to promote the message that meat is, indeed, murder and to “give peas a chance”.
PETA supporters wearing Paul McCartney masks descended on Mathew Street’s Cavern Club to hand out what they describe as “delicious veggie sausages” to passers-by, along with DVDs of “Glass Walls”, the veggie-loving former Beatle’s video exposé of the meat industry.
“We’re sure Paul will be delighted that we’ve chosen to honour his birthday by encouraging the public to give vegetarianism a try,” saysPETA Associate Director Mimi Bekhechi. “Whether you’re 6 or 64 or, in Paul’s case, a very young 72, going vegetarian is a great way to help animals, your health and the environment.”
Just don’t ask for a Big Macca.

I missed this earlier, but Paul’s also written a song for Meat-Free Monday that you can hear/download here. He’s inviting fans to submit images for a video.

I like the song!
I almost feel guilty for liking it, though, because I’ve only once consciously participated in MFM. I just had chicken soup.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Ralph of Kevin and Bean’s radio show has played the Meat Free Monday song twice during the entertainment news. You can imagine how well that went over, given how much they panned Queenie Eye as a children’s song.
But it made me think, you know, this song probably is geared towards kids. What better a time to get someone into the idea of a Meat-Free Monday than when she’s a child, singing a catchy song at the top of her lungs?
