I’ve been meaning to start a topic dedicated to Paul’s activism for a while. As Ahhh Girl posted in the news thread, Paul posted at his site a letter he wrote to Vladimir Putin on behalf of Greenpeace activists and journalists being held in Murmansk.

This isn’t the first time this year he wrote to Russian officials this year. He also wrote on behalf of the incarcerated members of Pussy Riot.

Posted at Paul’s FB today:

I would like animal protection on the global agenda because I want to see an end to human-inflicted animal suffering. Let’s ask the UN to recognise World Animal Day… http://www.wspamove.org/theUN

Posted at Paul’s FB:

I support OneVoice Movement because Israelis and Palestinians deserve peace, and the young people who are part of OneVoice need our help in making that happen.

From December 5th, online donations to OneVoice are being doubled. Please make a donation, and show your support for the moderate majority who want to put conflict behind them by clicking HERE: http://new.thebiggive.org.uk/p…..oject/7699

Give Ireland Back To The Irish should be mentioned in this thread.  Paul made it at the height of the troubles around the time of Bloody Sunday.

You often find that celebrities only support causes that are non controversial (eg. famine in the third world) often for selfish reasons as a PR exercise to get a bit of publicity and make themselves look good and further their careers.

I admire Paul for so overtly tackling an issue that he knew was extremely controversial.  Obviously people will have different opinions about the Irish situation and I don’t want to get into a flame war about that but suffice to say that Paul knew he would get a lot of flak for that record (and quite likely even death threats) and went ahead and did it anyway, which was very courageous of him.

Was quite surprised to read that Paul wanted to include Give Ireland Back To The Irish on the Wingspan: Hits and History compilation and the record company persuaded Paul to drop it. Would have been interesting to see the reaction by the media and others at its inclusion, if there was any – I doubt folk would care.

Obviously John was also speaking about the troubles in Ireland at the same time as Paul.

Ex-Beatle (and veggie fan) Paul McCartney takes notice of Syracuse Cauliflower Wing Flap

Ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney heard about the great Cauliflower Wing Controversy in Syracuse. He couldn’t just Let It Be .

Or, at least, a web site founded by the famous vegetarian advocate and his daughters got wind of the case and plans to do a story on it.

[snip]

Henson posted on her Facebook page Tuesday that she had been contacted by the London-based web site meatfreemondays.com, which wants to report on the controversy.

Celebrities using their star power to help animals

Paragraph about Paul in the article:

Paul McCartney sings “All You Need Is Love ” to perfection, but the mega-music star also knows that it takes money to protect abused animals. That’s why he remains an active supporter of PETA, Animal Defenders International, Cruelty Free International and dozens of other organizations dedicated to helping animals and protecting wildlife.

But John sings All You Need Is Love

Ha – I only just noticed that!

Paul has sung it live so technically they are correct.

That is your opinion. The writer’s opinion is that Paul did/does.

From the look of the article, I think it’s safe to assume this isn’t really someone who’s debating the merits of John’s All You Need Is Love vs. Paul’s live All You Need Is Love , but just picked a Beatles song that fit what they were talking about.

They probably did. However we don’t know that for sure so there is room to be temperamental and finicky.

A follow-up to the cauliflower wings story.

Paul McCartney’s vegetarian-oriented web site features Syracuse cauliflower wings (recipe)

The saga of Syracuse’s notorious Cauliflower Wings has made it into a feature story on ex-Beatle Paul McCartney ‘s Meat Free Mondays web site.

It’s accompanied by a recipe for the wings and some dipping sauces, courtesy of Abigail Henson, owner of LoFo restaurant in Armory Square.

Henson and LoFo touched off a mini-controversy in February by substituting the vegetable wings for chicken wings during the annual Syracuse Winterfest Wing Walk. Patrons paid $10 to tour local wing-joints, taste the samples and vote for their favorites.

Some weren’t happy with the cauliwings, but Henson said she also heard positive feedback.

The biggest feedback came from the London-based Meat Free Mondays site, started by McCartney and his daughters Stella and Mary. The site is devoted to reducing the consumption of meat by encouraging people to go meatless one day a week.

“Henson is now advocating for more inclusivity at contests like the Wing Walk, encouraging people to think out of the box when it comes to food and new ways of serving it,” the web site story reported.

Paul is urging people to go vegetarian for Good Friday rather than the traditional fish option. [x-posted to the news thead]

The pic PETA chose is a little odd. Makes it look like he’s not sure what he wants you to do tomorrow.
