That’s just typical, ain’t it? There’s always something regarding Apple, EMI, or both. They’ve eliminated and/or hampered some of the biggest Beatles related ideas.

I hate to disagree @meanmistermustard, but it was actually down, according to the statement Paul issued at the time, to the “still-existing business differences among The Beatles.” To which he added, “It would have been hypocritical to appear on stage with them, waving and smiling.”

Hypocritical? We don’t care! Just get on that stage with George and Ringo!

Here is the statement that Paul issued on 20 January 1988, the day of the ceremony:
“I was keen to go to (the dinner) and pick up my award, but after 20 years, the Beatles still have some business differences, which I had hoped would have been settled by now. Unfortunately, they haven’t been, so I would feel like a complete hypocrite waving and smiling with them at a fake reunion.”

20 years later, they couldn’t get along, 50 years later they can’t get along. It’s very sad.

From what i’ve read it was down to business differences between the two camps involving Apple and EMI. Paul was receiving a higher royalties rate than the others who were peeved when they found out and so there was court action. An article from the time writes
The reason: longstanding business and legal problems involving the surviving Beatles and their former record company, Apple. It would have been the trio’s first public appearance in America since the Beatles’ 1966 concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
“I was keen to go to (the dinner) and pick up my award, but after 20 years the Beatles still have some business differences which I had hoped would have been settled by now,” McCartney said in the statement. “Unfortunately, they haven’t been (settled), so I would feel like a complete hypocrite waving and smiling with (Harrison and Starr) at a fake reunion.”
More can be read over at Steve Hoffman’s thread.

I don’t disagree Apple and EMI were involved in the situation, but the reason he didn’t turn up was because he was being sued by Yoko and Ringo at the time.
