I have a version of Smile Away with trumpets, how I originally heard it. I just hear the released version, and the version I have, ceases to exist on the internet.
PS: Once again, this is my on my unknown bootleg, “Come Full Circle.”

Offline Paul needs to put out a cd/dvd of an early Wings concert when he did songs like Smile Away live. Wings were a great rocking band in the early days and would be great to see them perform when raw and not as polished as 1976. Plus his voice was awesome.
Another thing lingering in the vaults gathering dust. Sometimes it makes you want to scream.

I’d hoped it might have been the mono mix, but it doesn’t seem to have any brass. Is it this Thrillington /Ram mashup?
On a side note, are Smile Away ‘s backing vocals: “Don’t know how to do that”/”Learning how to do that” – is that right? I’m sure the latter is in the first chorus, then it goes back to “Don’t know…” in the rest of the song.

I never had a clue what Linda was singing about there: I wondered if it was “don’t know how to do that” but then some days it just sounds like random scatting: “adona-hada-dooda.”
As for this trumpets version of Smile Away , I’ve never heard it but it sounds pretty cool, I like it when Paul’s music uses brass.

Agreed, they did “Wild Life ” and “Lucille ” on the university tours in ’71 and ’72. Sometimes I go to the gig area at my university and imagine what it would have been like when Paul played there and I didn’t exist 🙁

That was the one I have, thanks. What is that exactly? And what is this “Come Full Circle” bootleg?
Backin Vocals: I always thought it was “Oh, I gotta wait now. Oh, I’m on my way now.” But, I’m pretty sure that’s wrong.

Offline This mashup is actually pretty good.
I always thought “Smile Away ” was a low level filler, barely deserving of being on a McCartney album.
This mashup though borders on fun, and I can see it at a party
The best mashup though remains the Silly Love Songs/Eminem combo: keeps all the good parts of SLS, removes the silly lyrics and adds on edgy vocals

Offline That mashup only provides a pale hint at what “Smile Away ” would have sounded like with full-throated brass, as the brass there sounds like some cheesy cheap synthesizer. What’s needed is at least three actual brass instruments — , trumpet, trombone and tenor sax. James Pankow, Lee Loughnane and Walt Parazaider (respectively) of Chicago are still around and still have the chops to do it. Pankow always was a great brass arranger; he could arrange a killer brass accompaniment to “Smile Away “.
I agree; it would punch up “Smile Away ” enormously. Wouldn’t it be cool if Paul rang up James (Pankow) on the telly-phonee-wonee and arranged to get this done?

Offline I’m with Funny Paper with this. It’s an interesting idea well worth following up but the brass doesn’t sound good here.
