‘My Brave Face’ is the opening song on Paul McCartney’s eighth solo album Flowers In The Dirt. See more…
I remember meeting up with Elvis [Costello] and thinking, ‘Can we hit it off writing together?’ But we did, we enjoyed our time together. ‘My Brave Face’ was one of the early things we did, and it became a single. I felt that Elvis was pulling it in a little bit of a Beatle-y way – a Beatle-ist direction – but it was fine by me. And then I remember the video was quite crazy: some guy trying to steal my Hofner bass.

This is a real boppin’ tune; I’m surprised there wasn’t already a thread for it. I especially love the melody of the “unaccustomed as I am” bit.
Though, when you pay a little more attention to the lyrics, it’s kind of sad. Poor guy can barely take care of himself.

Another classic example of a Beatle taking a sad song (lyric-wise) and making it better (ie happy-sounding). Incongruent.

Compose a ‘baby will you please come home’ note
Meant for you
As I clear away another
Untouched t.v. dinner
From the table, I laid for two
I can’t stop breaking down again
The simplest things set me off again
And take me to that place
