‘Motor Of Love’ is the twelfth song on Paul McCartney’s eighth solo album Flowers In The Dirt. See more…
We made a version I wasn’t too happy with, but I liked the song. It was gonna get dumped off the album. So I said why don’t we give it to some independent people, get some objectivity? I think it’s a good song and it might get back as a contender. I’d liked Chris Hughes and Ross Cullum’s work with Tears For Fears, and they worked up a more modern, hi-tech version.
‘Heavenly Father’ is like an old trick for me, it’s like ‘Mother Mary’. I have a father who’s no longer with us, but I realised the moment you say ‘Heavenly Father’ or ‘Mother Mary’ there’s also that connotation. I like a bit of God though, nothing wrong with that.

A generally ignored and overlooked track on ‘Flowers In The Dirt ‘ which came on my iPod earlier today. I love it and always have done.
Considering how much folk go on about George incorporating God lyrics into his songs and how it annoys them, why don’t they pick up on this Paul song which could be very easily interpreted (if its not meant to be) as a song about faith in God helping to make it thru?
I Can’t Get Over Your Love
No Matter How Hard Life Seems,
There’s A Light In My Dreams
Thanks To You.
My Friends Keep Asking Me Why
There’s Such A Smile On My Face,
There’s A Home At My Place,
Thanks To You.I Don’t Want Anything From You,
Turn On Your Motor Of Love.Motor Of Love, Motor Of Love.
Heavenly Father Look Down From Above,
I Can’t Get Over Your Powerful
Motor Of Love.I Can’t Get Over Your Love
No Matter How Lost I Feel,
I Know My Love Is Real,
Thanks To You.
You Simply Reached Out Your Hand
And Touched Me Deep In My Soul,
I Came In Out Of The Cold,
Thanks To You.I Won’t Steal Anything From You,
You Give Me More Than Enough.Motor Of Love, Motor Of Love.
Heavenly Father Look Down From Above,
I Can’t Get Over Your Powerful

When I Was Down And Counted Out,
Well I Remember I Felt So Bad

Isn’t it just another love song for Linda, though? I mean, you could interpret it as gospel, but then he’s used references to god in other songs as well even though he always says he doesn’t actually believe in a god or a deity, but more in the goodness of the universe or something. Most celebrities who have even the most basic belief in a (christian) god, don’t try to deny it. I can see why it’s confusing though. On one hand, he references a deity in some of his songs, only to go on record stating it doesn’t mean anything and that he isn’t religious.
Whichever it is, it’s a great song. I love it.

What gets me is that by using the term “Heavenly Father” its much more open to a religious connection than most Paul tracks. I’d agree that its more a song to and for Linda who will also be the individual in the song.
I just find it interesting that George is the one who gets beaten for it yet there is there this from Paul. Maybe some of George did rub off on Paul.

Having heard this track for the first time in a good while I can happily say it’s still as good as it ever was.
Most of the time with this song I see criticism of the length, but, like with ‘Winedark Open Sea’, it has never bothered me. The sound of both songs is so damn relaxing, comforting and gorgeous I can happily spend my time indulging along with Paul. Same goes for the instrumental ‘Broomstick’.
