‘Mama’s Little Girl’ was a b-side of Paul McCartney’s ‘Put It There’ single.
Although released in February 1990 during the Flowers In The Dirt period, ‘Mama’s Little Girl’ dates from the early 1970s. Wings began recording it on 14 March 1972 at Olympic Sound Studios, with the young Heather McCartney contributing backing vocals. See more…
I do a nice little vocal on it. Back by me kid. Anyone who’s got a daughter will love that.

I recently got a hold of the 1993 reissue of Wings’s Wild Life album, which contains this song, originally recorded in 1972 during the Red Rose Speedway sessions, as a bonus track. I must admit I wasn’t expecting much from the bonus tracks, but this little acoustic ditty was a pleasant surprise. (I am a sucker for a good Macca acoustic ditty, as you know.)

Nice song. Sounds like a 12-string guitar Paul’s picking.
To me this song presents an interesting 3rd category, between “Inspired” and “Not inspired”. I can’t quite say it’s inspired, but on the other hand, it doesn’t suffer from the telltale characteristics of his notoriously uninspired efforts, where one almost winces with embarrassment at how he’s trying to milk music out of a dry stone that never really got off/the/ground. Part of this 3rd category involves artful fleshing out of a simple nucleus, and all the myriad ways he fleshes it out here are pleasing (perhaps my favorite being the what sounds like a bass clarinet), yet don’t quite rise to inspiration.

Yeah, you can see why it remained unreleased – but it’s a sweet surprise as a bonus track.
Also, the fact that Heather sang on it is adorable.

This is the most charming hidden gem from McCartney I’ve heard in years, very White Album in overall feel.
