‘Love In Song’ is the third song on Wings’ fourth studio album Venus And Mars. See more…

The song was written by Paul McCartney under the working title ‘Lovin’ Song’.

I sat down, I had my 12-string and I started to write this thing. I thought, ‘That’s a nice opening,’ you know. ‘My heart cries out for love’. I thought, ‘That’ll do for a nice opening for a love song.’ I liked one of the other lines, ‘My eyes cry out as a tear still born in misunderstanding.’ I thought, ‘That’s a nice little line.’ Otherwise, it’s just a tune that, sort of, came forth. I feel I don’t have a lot of control over some songs but some songs I do. But with this song, I just started playing my guitar, singing those words, wrote them down and I said to Linda, ‘How do you like that?’ And that was it.

How about a thread for this criminally overlooked tune. It’s probably my favorite from Venus And Mars . Thoughts?

I have to admit I didn’t know the song before but you got me addicted to it. It’s so mysterious and changes all the time, sometimes it sounds even oriental to me and then again I feel like there are even Chinese influences.  And the changing of Paul’s voice between the ‘sad verses’ and the ‘hopeful verses’ is so amazing. Just unbelievable Paul Nelson called it another banal ballad in the Rolling Stones critic!

Not once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita. - Stephen T. Erlewine on Sgt Pepper's

I feel like this is the song that I’ve appreciated the least on Venus And Mars . It is a very brilliant song, and I will definitely have to give it a better listen.

I do really like this one. Every time I listen to Venus & Mars and this comes on, I think, “Dang, that’s a good melody.” It’s a good melody. Paul just flexing his bottomless well of good melodies on the rest of us songwriters as per usual a-hard-days-night-paul-7
