Hey Diddle is a rather basic song written during Ram and rejected from the album. They went to Nashville for the recording of Venus And Mars and overdubbed new vocals and fiddle. Personally i prefer the Ram version as the fiddle gets tiring and seems out of place at times.
It is an obviously incomplete song that would work well in the context of a medley kind of like Mean Mr. Mustard, but as a full song, I can see how it was rejected twice from a Paul solo album. I do however live the somg and fancy learning it on guitar.

I love this song. It may not be incredible, but it is catchy. It kind of reminds me of a sunny, breezy day in the countryside, with the atmosphere it has, if that makes any sense.

I agree, the fiddle is kind of weird and annoying in the Venus And Mars version, but, the vocals are positioned a little better. Overall, I prefer the Ram version, too.

Welp, you sold me with that description! I’m listening now and I can already tell it’s going on my “Listening for a Pastoral Holiday (Virtual or Otherwise)” list.

… which would’ve made it ideal for McCartney, given it has only a handful of genuinely complete songs (“Maybe I’m Amazed ,” “Every Night ,” “Teddy Boy ,” and “Man We Was Lonely”… and “Junk,” if we’re being generous). Too bad it hadn’t been written yet at the time.
