‘Bip Bop’ is the second song on Wings’s debut album Wild Life. See more…

The track is one of Paul McCartney’s simplest, a blues-style backing and childlike throwaway lyrics. McCartney once described ‘Bip Bop’ as “The weakest song I have ever written in my life”, but in later years indicated an affection for it.

I can get a bit perfectionist about things and think, ‘This is just not one of my grand pieces,’ and often I’ll get a bit down on them. I remember being very down on a song called ‘Bip Bop’ and thinking, ‘Oh God , how banal can you get?’ But I once said that to a producer named Trevor Horn, who produced Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones and a lot of cool recording artists, and he said, ‘That’s one of my favourites of yours!’ And then I could see what he saw in it, which is what I saw in it when I wrote it and wanted to record it, so he made me feel better about that.

You might have noticed I’ve added 10 or so new McCartney song features this week. I was filling in missing titles from the Wingspan: Hits & History compilation, which is why I’ve written about Bip Bop before some of the more significant songs.

I might do the rest of Wild Life next and go chronologically from there. It’d be good to complete the McCartney song list, or as much as is feasible.

Anyway, bip bop be-bop bop, bip bop be-bop bam.

I find Bip Bop enormously entertaining and satisfying and always feel after listening to it like my stomach after a tasty meal.

Bip Bop probably isn’t the first song I’d play to demonstrate Paul’s incredible songwriting ability, but I wouldn’t consider it the weakest song he’s ever written. (Stiff competition from most of Run Devil Run ).  This one has a nice energy in the instrumentation, an engaging melody and a simple yet effective riff and chord progression.

Almost all of ‘Run Devil Run ‘ are covers.
