‘Beware My Love’ is the fourth song on Wings’ fifth studio album Wings At The Speed Of Sound. See more…
Wings initially recorded the song on 28 August 1975 at Olympic Sound Studios in London. Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham guested on drums in the absence of Joe English.
John was a good friend of mine, and I was a great admirer of his. I would always say that my top three drummers were Ringo, Keith Moon and Bonham. I really liked the power of John. I hooked up with him that one time and said, ‘Fancy recording something? I’ve got this song.’ We just went into the studio and decided to play together I got on the piano, and he thrashed his drums.

On an album that is pretty laid back and lacking in real up-tempo numbers, ‘BML’ has always been an album highlight for me – and a favourite out of all of Paul’s catalogue. The lead vocal is outstanding (Paul letting his vocal go is often a fabulous listen) and it’s great to hear this variation of Wings let go and rock out. The sound of the keyboard keys being pressed is a joy as well.
Note: Looking at the date, I cannot believe that this and ‘WATSOS’ was remastered 8 years ago. Feel like banging my head off at how slow the Archive series is going.

The outtake with Bonzo on the remaster is great too. Listened to this last night actually, and I think Linda’s vocals add a lot to the song as well. As far as the album lacking uptempo numbers you have a point, but the big hit Silly Love songs is about as up tempo as it gets.

Beware My Love shows that Wings wasn’t just some alibi pastime for Paul McCartney , but one of the best bands of the 70s. Such a great rock hymn, featuring one of his best vocal performances and getting the max from guitars, drums and bass. Wonderful intro structure to create tension until the song reaches his impressive final form. Probably my favourite Wings song together with Nineteen-Hundred and Eighty-Five.

Back in the day, when I was a youngster, I would really appreciate it when Paul would put out a rocker. Even so, the guitars were a bit subdued volume-wise on the track, so it wasn’t a full out blaster. But nice to hear some distortion.

Re: Linda’s vocals: Don’t they always?
Silly Love Songs has that fascinating uptempo bass line, but it has some slow parts too, with that “I love you” and “How can I tell you about my loved one” bits. That bass line seems very original though, I’m not sure how I would classify it. Is it rock? Is it funky? I’ve never heard anything quite like it.

Its definitely a funky bassline, has a been of disco flavor as well. Overall its captures the feel of late 70s pop quite well.

As a Ledhead of course I appreciated the Bonzo feature, but ultimately I think the drums on the final album version suit the song best. Bonzo is a little bit heavy-handed for Paul’s lighthearted style of songwriting (even on a more driving song like this one), and the dynamics on the final recording are just *chef’s kiss*.
As for Linda’s vocals, I will die on the hill that she was an essential part of Early Paul’s/Wings’s charm, and I really miss her on Paul’s solo work where she didn’t sing/after she died. Along with Denny she is an essential part of bringing that homespun harmony to Wings which evokes some of the Beatleian vocal harmony charm.
