Quite probably my favourite McCartney from the solo years, the juxtaposition of a sad story with jaunty music is a great trope that occurs throughout popular music pre-dating McCartney with, say The Tracks of My Tears by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. ABBA were/are geniuses at it, but Pet Shop Boys ‘ version of Always On My Mind takes things to a different level. Prince was pretty good at it too, and of course there’s always I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor and pretty much the whole of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours album and the sublime Little Lies from slightly later. I particularly like how high the bass is mixed in Another Day which is very satisfying.

Predictably it was always going to be slated by the critics and of course John too in How Do You Sleep. But I love this song, it shows Paul’s interest in the everyday lives of people – kitchen sink stuff, in vogue with other artists of the era too.
Regardless of the press it got to No. 2 in the UK charts. I had a look at the charts for that week and T Rex held the No 1 slot for 6 weeks with Hot Love ( well deserved) and a week or two prior had been My Sweet Lord . So not bad at all. No 5 in the U.S too. He really wanted it be a hit.
Apparently the “Sound of Five” he refers to in the song (that she post a letter to) was a 60s British radio show that people would write to with their problems. Although he did write it with Linda’s experience in his mind before she met him.
I really love the harmonies with Paul and Linda – just beautiful.

Yes, those are good examples OS. I’ve been interested in that genre since I was a kid. For the last 60 years or more, You Are My Sunshine has been one of the first songs taught in school and is very popular at assemblies. The vibe is usually something like this…
I was kinda blown away when I encountered the actual lyrics.
You Are My Sunshine
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You’ll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away
The other night, dear,
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
When I awoke, dear,
I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried..
I’ll always love you
And make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me
To love another
You’ll regret it all some day;
You told me once, dear
You really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you’ve left me
And love another
You have shattered all my dreams;
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You’ll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.
Since then I’m usually keenly aware when a song contains this phenomenon.

What is she dipping in the pocket of her raincoat to get?
The thought of “drugs” being the answer to that question popped into my head the other day.

To me, given the atmosphere of the context Paul is creating, I wouldn’t reach for a darker explanation. He seems to be weaving an ordinary day of an ordinary young woman, so I would assume she’s reaching for keys, or her lipstick, or her change purse — or better yet, her compact.
