In my opinion is not needed. You are the one saying it so it’s already implied that it is your opinion. It does not make it sound like you’re being nicer nor does it change the statement from being objective to subjective. If it does anything at all, it weakens the statement it is paired with and makes the speaker sound unsure. And I don’t opine that Derek went too far in post seventy. He said that The Beatles are very good singers but that he doesn’t think they are amazing singers (he never said they suck). That’s a fair thing to say. I don’t necessarily agree with it, but that does’t make his opinion of less value. Are people only allowed to express their opinions on this forum when they are extolling The Beatles?
I disagree completely with your opening comment. On these boards we talk a lot about facts and we have some pretty strong opinions. It makes a lot of sense to me that we attempt to distinguish between the two. Stating an opinion as a fact is an overt attempt to diminish the position of someone who has a differing opinion. Trying to work out whether something is implied or not is an exercise in frustration and it’s much easier if the author lets is know what they have in mind. I have been on boards where people try to pass off opinions as facts and they can get pretty nasty pretty quickly.
For what it’s worth; I think Paul is a very good singer but not the best in the world or anything – but the combination of skills and talents the four lads had are pretty hard to beat.

Post 70 just went too far in my opinion.
How so? When I said God gave black women great pipes, I meant that black women are generally able to reach the higher feminine pitches but can also sing at low enough pitches to where they can get into male ranges too. They have an extremely wide range.
When people say Paul or John are in the top 10 or 20 singers of all time, yes, that’s their opinion and they’re entitled to it, but have they listened to the many other great singers out there as well. For example, Angela Winbush just has a full and flawless voice that puts her on a level beyond most white rock stars, but she didn’t have the cultural exposure that people like Mick Jagger and Elvis had.
If we can include lesser known artists, including plenty of choirs and gospel artists, Paul and John might not even be in the top 200 singers (if, like I said, we’re talking about vocals alone and not songwriting, legacy and lyrics). Beatles might be among the very best singers if we’re mostly only including mainstream white artists, but why limit ourselves to that metric?

On vocals alone, Pavarotti beats John & Paul, one could say, but is that a fair enough comparison? John & Paul might sound shitty doing Nessun Dorma, while I don’t think I really would have wanted to listen to Pavarotti doing Hey Bulldog .
So, what I’m trying to say is that J & P are among the best in their area of music. It’s not limiting yourself to a metric, it’s trying to make a fair enough comparison. I’m not even sure if it’s even that either.

Finally, @Derek_Francis, you’ve done what I’d hoped you would have been doing all along. You’ve given substance to your statement. Thank you. Your post 82 is absolutely fine and befitting the level of discussion found on this forum.

The forum needs a little heat to keep it bubbling away; it would be pretty dull if everyone simply repeat posted how great everything the four moptops ever did was good. Plus i’d have to say nice things about ‘Hold Me Tight ‘ and that’s just not going to happen.

It was unfair of me to single out Paul. He’s on par vocally with George and Lennon.I wouldn’t call any of the Beatles great singers. Amazing songwriters, amazing lyricists, amazing composers. Their singing, very good, but not amazing.
It’s nothing against them. They did the most they could with their voice. God just didn’t give them the same pipes he gave black singers.
I still don’t understand why you don’t classify them as good. So not only is Paul good, but none of them? What makes “black singers” better? A lot of people thought Sam Smith was black before they saw him…. I’m just not feeling the stereotype.
Btw, not attacking. Just wondering.
EDIT: This is what happens when you don’t read all the posts. Don’t do this.
