So these are now coming out the same day as Bob Dylan’s Complete Basement Tapes set AND the extended cut of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” I guess I better start saving up.

A new microsite for the upcoming remasters ‘Venus And Mars ‘ and ‘Wings And The Speed Of Sound’ has been launched (news courtesy of wogblog). It’s a pretty cool site with info on all the album tracks and each of the band members, videos, photo gallery etc.

Very cool that, thanks parlance! Imagine a time when musicians regularly filmed 60-second TV ads for their new albums – even made little films out of them. (Music industry was HUGE in those days)

Thanks Parlance.
You can listen to previews of all of the tracks on the deluxe ‘WATSOS’ disc (you have to click on ‘view in itunes’ and be taken there to hear them). Can someone listen to ‘Message To Joe’ and tell me what the heck it is. Lasts 24 seconds so you hear (if thats what you’d call it) all of it and it sounds like it was taken from a dodgy cassette found in the bin which hasn’t been fixed.
Dear God . That’s a bonus track. Surely there was something, anything better than that.

I know i’m being picky but that’s me.
It’s an odd selection of material, most of the demo’s sound good and interesting and its great to have the two outtakes (one booted but in far inferior quality) but it is just two outtakes. And due to the such long wait for this it feels a bit of a let down – i’ll still get it tho as i adore the album.
The selection on ‘Venus And Mars looks to be better’. If the long ‘Rock Show’ outtake is the same as the booted one then its fully deserving of an official release as its fantastic.
Coming to think of it, i thought one purposes of these was to round up the non-album singles so where is the edit of ‘Venus And Mars /Rockshow’ that was on ‘Wingspan’ (not that its anything to be overly bothered about)? The single edit of ‘Letting Go’ is here but its also a remix (wiki – “The single version is remixed and is approximately a minute shorter than the album track. The single also incorporates elements that were not included on the album track, such as an organ glissando at the beginning.“.)
I found a clip of Paul doing ‘Baby Face’, one of the bonus tracks on ‘VAM’. And my word is he friggin’ adorable in it.

Of course, the single edit of “Coming Up ” (Live at Glasgow) was also omitted from the deluxe version of McCartney II (as was “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reggae,” though general consensus is that that may have actually dated from an earlier album session)… sooo, I don’t know.

‘Rudolph’ will probably be on ‘Back To The Egg ‘. Didn’t know there was a single edit of the live ‘Coming Up ‘ performance.
Wogblog reports that Best Buy will have a couple of exclusive 7″ singles, one each for the new remasters of ‘Venus And Mars ‘ and ‘Wings At The Speed Of Sound ‘.
Venus And Mars will have “Venus And Mars “/”Rockshow” and At The Speed of Sound will have “Let ‘Em In”. While supplies last, the label says, and we guess the singles won’t be packaged together with the CDs (they’re bigger than CDs), probably just handed out at the checkout counter. No words as to whether these will be one sided singles or if they will have their original B-sides.
“Venus And Mars /Rock Show” b/w “Magneto and Titanium Man” was released in the U.S.A. on 27 October 1975 and in the U.K. on 28 November 1975. The single version of the A side is considerably shorter than the album version of the songs; in the single “Rock Show” is cut by more than 3 minutes and “Venus And Mars ” is cut by a few seconds. The single peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S.A., but failed to chart on the U.K. singles chart.
“Let ‘Em In” b/w “Beware My Love” was released on 23 July 1976 and was a #2 hit in the U.K., and a #3 hit in U.S.A. It was also Paul McCartney ‘s first 12″ single, although it was only released in France this way.

It’s included on the U.S. versions of both All the Best! and Wingspan. It’s about 45 seconds shorter than the full-length version included on the deluxe edition of McCartney II , basically cutting the third verse. Considering “Silly Love Songs” was released as a single as is at nearly 6 minutes (and “Band On The Run ” and “Let ‘Em In,” both at over 5 minutes), it’s kind of baffling as to why they felt the need to further pare that song down for its single release (ditto “Wonderful Christmastime ,” whose single edit is a mere 30 seconds shorter than its full-length version).

‘Junior’s Farm’ and ‘Waterfalls’ on ‘Wingspan’ were also the edited versions, sad as they aren’t that good. Personally i’d rather have had the full versions and one less track but i get why they were included. There’s another edit that’s not on the Archive ‘Venus And Mars ‘; ‘Juniors Farm’; so its obviously not a collection that gathers together all the odds and ends out there. There are also mono and stereo promo edits of ‘Let ‘Em In’ that come out well (many of the edited tracks are horrible). Maybe that will be further down the line.
A thread over at Steve Hoffman’s forum has three pages of discussion on Paul’s unique 7″ singles.

From Wogblog
According to someone who has received an advance copy of the “Venus And Mars ” and “Speed of Sound” sets, the card in the package announcing the next releases are saying that these will be “Tug Of War ” and “Pipes Of Peace “.
This is a deviation from the 2011 “insiders information” list, which we also posted in this blog back then. Apart from “Wings Over America ” being released before schedule, this is the first major deviation.
It seems fitting to release “Tug Of War ” and “Pipes Of Peace ” simultaneously, since a lot of the tracks on “Pipes Of Peace ” were leftovers from the excellent “Tug Of War ” album recording sessions. Of course, there’s no indication as to when these new releases will be scheduled.
Would really like to see ‘Tug Of War ‘ being issued but surely it would make more sense to get all the Wings albums out first. Why they can’t just go in chronological order according to when the albums were first released mystifies me.

Examiner has reported that in response to the above news that ‘Pipes and Peace’ and ‘Tug Of War ‘ are hinted as being the next in line in the Archive series for release, a spokesman for Paul’s record label Condor Music has said nothing has yet been confirmed for what albums will follow the soon to be issued ‘Venus And Mars ‘ and Wings At The Speed Of Sound ‘ albums.
I’d have thought they’d have a plan of attack for the series, the news they don’t doesn’t surprise me – in fact it makes sense. They probably have a couple of those revolving wheels where the release dates and albums are determined by randomly spinning the wheels and seeing where they stop.
