These two albums were the ones I was most excited about him releasing (I’ve been waiting since I was like thirteen for these lol), but now that they’re out I’m just not excited enough to get them. It’s just so expensive, and I know I’ll only look at the box sets like four times in the next decade.

I’m just holding out hope someone who bought the Deluxe Editions eventually uploads the 16 exclusive tracks not on the mere Special Editions somewhere online.  a-hard-days-night-paul-4This YouTuber did 3 of them (who knows if he’ll do the rest, though):

I mostly want the studio version of “The Mess.” (Speaking of which, anyone else notice Paul’s spoken intro was cut from the remastered live version of that song? And, meanwhile, “Jazz Street” is a whole 3 minutes shorter than the bootleg version I’ve had for some time. What gives??  paul-mccartney-facepalm_gif)

The two disc release is substantially weaker than any bootleg i’ve seen of Red Rose Speedway . I found an early vinyl bootleg of the alternate tracklist and event that seemed like a better deal, even though its availible online for free. The real perks I see in owning this is having the singles on a disc of vinyl ex. Little Woman Love, Hi Hi Hi , C Moon, Live And Let Die . This is Paul’s best singles era its fun to have it on vinyl. It was also cool to include the Live And Let Die group take as that wwe what initially got me excited. I was excited to have Jazz Street as well but I was disapointed by the shortened version.

Wogblog report that Flaming Pie is up next on this marginal distraction as we slow crawl to our death (I think I was 3 months in the womb when it started). 5 CDs and 2 DVDs is the limited edition set and a release date of 24th July.

No tracklisting or other details yet makes you wonder how Paul has filled 5 CDs; the original album, all the tracks on the various singles, the handful of early alternate mixes that were on a promo tape. Will we finally be getting outtakes?

Please for the love of God do not f**k up Flaming Pie ‘s deluxe edition. While I have virtually no confidence in this release, I hope they can set themselves on the right track as the 50th anniversary of Ram fast approaches

No ’Back To The Egg ’ or London Town ’ reissue yet we got another ’Ram ’ would only highlight the pathetic handling of this. The haphazard inclusion of the additional material only adds to how much of a joke it’s all been.

I honestly don’t know why they didn’t go chronologically, or maybe taken a decade at a time (allowing them to jump around a little, but still retaining some sort of logic). The releases themselves have been done pretty well, but the dartboard they’re presumably using to select the next album must be looking pretty worn out by now.

Yeah, I initially thought we’d get Pie after Flowers, but when they released WL and RRS instead, I assumed they were going to go back and finish the Wings stuff first. But, no, they’re throwing us another curveball.ahdn_paul_01  At any rate, this better be the last album in this line released by itself.

EDIT: The author who posted on that blurb on Wogblog claims in a reply to said post that LT and BTTE are both rumored for a December release at the end of the year. Let’s hope so.

Some of these releases are severely lacking in quantity of material.  Many of these sets have one bonus disc tracklists and timestamps shorter than the respective album.  I recently learned that the At The Speed Of Sound bonus CD is so short it fits on one side of a 12inch record.

At least it had a good few proper outtakes. But, yeah, the amount of bonus tracks we are getting is also a joke at times. The whole thing just sucks, it’s difficult to find one aspect of the releases which was well done (price, content, format etc).

The only positive is that 60% of the time the content they have is actually decent.  There’s just so little of it.  I actually really like the tracks on ATSOS and the One Hand Clapping takes on Band On The Run .  I just wish there were more.  He should make his archives like the Imagine Box that came out in 2018.  Talk about a box set.

Some of these albums just didn’t have much noteworthy supplemental material beyond what made the final album; Speed of Sound was one of those… which makes me wonder what else they’re going to put on the upcoming Flaming Pie release, given I don’t know what else may have been recorded during those sessions beyond the 2 B-sides “Looking for You” and “Broomstick” — maybe “Tropic Island Hum” as well. Meanwhile, other albums had so many outtakes and so many different sessions, not all the material from said sessions were included on these Archive Collection releases (e.g. “Blackpool” omitted from Wild Life ; “Henry’s Blues” and any early version of “Soily” omitted from Red Rose Speedway ; “Send Me the Heart,” “New Orleans,” and “Crawl of the Wild” omitted from Venus And Mars ; “Seems Like Old Times,” “Give Us a Chord Roy,” and “Unbelievable Experience” omitted from Tug Of War ; “Same Love,” “Don’t Break the Promise,” and the songs from the ill-fated Phil Ramone sessions omitted from Flowers in the Dirt — unless they’ll appear on the deluxe editions of either Press To Play or Back in the U.S.S.R.).  mccartney-shrug_01_gif

The Phil Ramone tracks may appear on ‘Flaming Pie ‘ as they were issued on various singles.

There will be tons of alternate takes and demos that could have been included never mind all the songs Paul has tried and ditched. ‘Oobu Joobu’ touched on what was in the vaults and we haven’t really even got that kind of material on these.

Maybe the premise is less to do with outtakes and more to collect together all the b-sides and random tracks that Paul has released around each album, but even that has not been complete on these discs. It’s all very much all over the place and doing little bits of things here and there yet omitting some of what should have been included.

I know there were rumours at the start with various timelines and new releases but the time this archive series is taking in seeing all the albums released that will never happen. It’s so damn slow. The archive ‘BOTR’ was issued a decade ago!!

Paul is apparently approving all material included but surely folk with half a brain can search the vaults, compile the albums within a rough guide of what to include, send it to Paul, he takes a couple of hours to listen, make any amendments suggested, and then approve it. An anthology-style box set could contain more of what was omitted at the time, for whatever reason.

Kinda pathetic when a lot of us fans could likely do a better – and quicker – job of assembling material for these releases (given proper access) than the people who are currently overseeing it.  paul-mccartney-facepalm_gif

It’s been done. Paul’s complete catalogue, along with additional side projects such as Glasgow ’79, was compiled and uploaded online by Voo-Doo Records for the ‘Ultimate Archive Collection‘, 48 albums in total in two years. Obviously couldn’t access the unreleased material but they compiled all non-album tracks, notable outtakes and demos and additional live material. One of the most impressive fan releases I’ve seen and not one pointless box in sight.
