@PeterWeatherby Thanks for the “review” (though it’s more of a thorough history).

There’s been a write-up of the re-release in Rolling Stone and in People Magazine. “The Lovers that Never Were” is highlighted – good news for me, as it’s one of my faves.

Has ‘FitD’ been released in stores, I was in a record shop today which had no trace of it anywhere?

Yes, it looks like your shop neglected to order it.

Txs.  I was gonna save my money anyways, but it’s always good to hear it from someone else.

I haven’t had any problems with the way the previous albums were remastered. I even thought they did a good job with Pipes Of Peace .  I kept Tug Of War because the new one was a remix.

But this Flowers In The Dirt remaster might as well be a remix. They took out some of the high end and boosted the bass, and it has the effect of making the album seem contemporary instead of a product of the 80’s. They seem to have removed some of that rich, layered sound on Motor of Love and made it sound more punchy and percussive.

Here are some comments from Hoffman forums that seem to mirror my own, except that this listener does not prefer the original “Motor of Love” or the 80’s sound in general:

I have only the 1993 Cd to compare and find the remaster sounds a lot softer and darker than the comparatively tinny 1993 one.
Overall this is good. It’s as if they have tried to de-80es-fy the sound by shaving some highs, adding more bass and selected mids to “fill the sound up”. My Brave Face and This One benefit from more bass and punch. How Many People and especially Motor Of Love are relieved from over-airiness. However some tracks sound dull: Distractions, Figure Of Eight and Don’t Be Careless Love. Rough Ride loses some reverb depth.

Of course, you may like that. It depends on how you feel about the album, I guess.

Also, there are rumors going around that this is the last Archive Collection release because the last few didn’t sell well enough.

Hopefully not, since some of the early Wings albums are out of print.

If they kill this thing off without releasing Red Rose Speedway and Back To The Egg , I’m going to throw an almighty fit. I swear, this project has been so haphazard …

Massively overpriced if you want all the songs, poor selection of bonus material, releases take an age to materialise hindering any momentum, latest release so badly thought through a spokesman had to come out and defend it.

Maybe instead of smugly insisting they are right, Paul and the team behind these started listening to the fans and stopped pissing about. Sales might then increase.  It’s not difficult?. Focus on the music and stop with all the bullshit that so few care about.  We are fundamentally fans of the music not pieces of paper and photos from the archives.

I remember buying the hi-definition downloads of ‘McCartney II ‘ as it was an incredible collection. Only £25 for all the music. Then ‘Ram ‘ came along and to get ‘Thrillington ‘ you had to buy the box and since then it’s been all downhill. No wonder sales are down.

We’ll have to make our own Archive, with Red Rose Speedway and Back To The Egg …. actually forget the Archive.

I was a supporter of the archive releases because I was optimistic that Paul was going to do a good job. My support was greatly weakened when they made the Tug Of War remix album replace the original Tug Of War album, making the original a supplementary thing. Then this release has caused me to lose all faith. I think that having the bonus tracks that everyone actually cares about as a supplementary download only and not the main bonus disc was the stupidest thing they could have done. The two bonus discs that come in the box are different versions of the same bloody songs. Why couldn’t they have made the secondary demo disc the digital download and made the B-Side etc. disc the primary bonus disc, or even better, just have all 3 bonus discs on physical CD’s in the box. I know they can fit 5 discs in the box, because they did it with Ram .

Discs two and three fit on one CD so they could have merged discs two and three together and added the b-sides to the remaining disc, keeping to the 3 CD, 1 DVD set. I get the feeling they decided to push the deluxe sets and make money so they took away the simplistic access to the music hoping fans would simply swallow the costs. Instead fans decided to wait to buy the deluxe sets of the albums they want instead of everything and so sales have severely fallen.

Who would have thought expensive sets will result in lower sales and illegal downloading. It’s all our fault tho.

One way of quickening up the process would have been to release the archive ‘Off The Ground ‘ at the same time due to the Costello connection with that album as well (‘The Lovers That Never Were’, ‘Mistress and Maid’). ‘OtG’ was re-released as a digipack a couple of years back and is only 23 years and so many months old but at least there would be a quickening of pace. It’s certainly better than one album every generation.

And, again, he employed the same backing band for both (albeit with Blair Cunningham replacing Chris Whitten on drums after the ’89/’90 world tour). Flaming Pie should be the last of these to be released individually. Everything else can be paired up:

Wild Life  /Red Rose Speedway

London Town Back To The Egg

Give My Regards To Broad Street Press To Play

UnpluggedOff The Ground

Back in the U.S.S.R.Run Devil Run

Tripping The Live Fantastic Paul Is Live  (I’d be just fine with these not being reissued)

Wishful thinking, no doubt, but could easily be done — IF they wanted.  ahdn_paul_01

Im pretty sure Pipes Of Peace is the second newest re-release.

I was hoping he would do somerhing similar to Flowers In The Dirt with Flaming Pie or Off The Ground

So before the Archive collection is complete Paul is re-releasing the Archive collection!?

Image result for what seinfeld gifImage Enlarger

If anyone wants to they can go online and buy the damn album(s), they’re not difficult to find – unless you want a nice coloured vinyl.

The whole project becomes more of a joke the longer it’s dragged out.

Warning. Swear words in the spoiler.

Just f**k the f**k off. Stop pissing about, and give us the rest of the f*****g albums before everyone is dead.

There’s an ass for every seat. I don’t begrudge folk for buying anything – I’ve probably bought dumber things. But I agree with you that this is a bit much.

Replace the word “albums” with “books” and that is my exact rant to Lewisohn…again! paul-mccartney

Does anyone else here suspect that Paul has completely forgotten that he made Red Rose Speedway ?  I really like that album …

I think for any release you have to ask whether it is viewed favourably by the masses nowadays or can be paired with an album that was? ? If not then you’d better get excited for the 46th reissue of ‘BOTR’.

I think it could be paired with Wild Life . Both are immensely underrated albums.

I agree, but that’s also a good reason for them to not release those albums. They have to think about the profit.
