According to someone who has received an advance copy of the “Venus And Mars ” and “Speed of Sound” sets, the card in the package announcing the next releases are saying that these will be “Tug Of War ” and “Pipes Of Peace “.
This is a deviation from the 2011 “insiders information” list, which we also posted in this blog back then. Apart from “Wings Over America ” being released before schedule, this is the first major deviation.
It seems fitting to release “Tug Of War ” and “Pipes Of Peace ” simultaneously, since a lot of the tracks on “Pipes Of Peace ” were leftovers from the excellent “Tug Of War ” album recording sessions. Of course, there’s no indication as to when these new releases will be scheduled.
Would really like to see ‘Tug Of War ‘ being issued but surely it would make more sense to get all the Wings albums out first. Why they can’t just go in chronological order according to when the albums were first released mystifies me.
They seem to be releasing them by popularity/acclaim… in which case it would make sense to then release Tug Of War next. But to also release Pipes Of Peace – one of his most reviled albums – with it? I, too, would prefer to see them finish off the ’70s albums first before they venture beyond 1980.
He’s already done McCartney II , though I guess that was an accompaniment to the McCartney reissue.
Perhaps mixing it up gives people a better idea of his range. If they spent too long putting out Wild Life , Red Rose Speedway , London Town and Back To The Egg people might stop paying attention. By leaping around a little it keeps people alert.
The other option would be to put these out more frequently so they become less of an event. Put out the remaining four Wings albums in the new year, a few McCartney ones in the middle of 2015, and finish off the 80s studio reissues by the end of the year. Spreading them out makes sense from a marketing point of view, but the quality of some of those albums is so low that they might just want to sneak them out without too much fanfare. Who’s going to get excited over Wild Life or Press To Play ?

I get the feeling Paul’s perfectionism won’t allow that to happen.

Fo me, it is a matter of collecting his post-Beatles catalogue. I don’t want to buy all of the pre-re-mastered CD’s and then replace them with the re-masters. Therefore, I wish they would release tham all today – tomorrow at the latest.

While I don’t DISlike Press To Play , I definitely think it’s hands-down his weakest album, along with Pipes Of Peace . On the other hand, I quite enjoy Wild Life . Sure, it’s pretty unpolished, but so was McCartney (which, when you think about it, really only has 3-5 fully-formed songs on it; the rest are mere doodlings). “Some People Never Know” remains one of his most overlooked songs. “Dear Friend” is a nice olive branch to John. “Mumbo” is a fun rocker in the same vein as “Smile Away .” Even the silly “Bip Bop” has its charm.

This is it for me too. Also, I know since the Anthology days they’ve been staggering releases so that they don’t inundate the market. That might have been an issue in the 1960s, but nowadays the sorts of people who buy McCartney CDs or box sets are most likely not averse to buying four or five different titles in a single shopping spree. It’s not like kids saving up their pocket money are his core audience.
He doesn’t even need to promote these reissues (as evidenced by the recent Wings ones) so I don’t know why they can’t just put out an enormous box set and individual titles at the same time. It worked fine for The Beatles, John Lennon and George Harrison (whoever they are).

Picked up the two latest deluxe (thats the 2-cd, no book/dvd/paperclips editions) releases on Saturday and have started to listen to ‘Venus And Mars ‘. It was ‘Wings At The Speed Of Sound ‘ however that propelled me to pick them, i adore that album.

Got ‘Wings Over America ‘ from iTunes (i had a voucher, otherwise i’d have bought the cd).
Had a look at the bonus tracks released on the deluxe Queen album remasters and whilst Paul doesn’t give us a bumper amount we get a lot better than the Queen fans got. I’d be livid with some of the crap that was stuck on those – who the hell gives a crap about the complete backing track of ‘You’re My Best Friend’

Wow!!! It been 5 months since last post and nothing has come out about the next releases in the series.
Anyway.
Regardless of the time delay on each release one of the gripes about the series is the lack of bonus material on the cds (certainly the deluxe editions; you can get uber-deluxe collectors edition but they cost a fortune). To address these a fan label has taken to putting together the alternate McCartney archive collection, gathering up all the outtakes, alternate mixes, promo edits etc in the best possible quality (including upgrades). Obviously there cant be previously unreleased stuff from Paul’s archives included but if you are a Paul fan these are well worth hunting down.
There is no release schedule, all are being worked on and each release will be dependent on which album is ready to go first instead of being bogged down in having to get one finished before the next, but it will certainly be far quicker than the official one (basically we all will hopefully be alive by the time this is completed whereas i doubt i’ll be alive to ever see the official ‘Wild Life ‘ remaster and i hope to be alive for another 70+ years).
Each album will be as follows
McCartney – 1 CD
Ram – 4 CD
Wild Life – 2 CD
Red Rose Speedway – 2 CD
Band On The Run – 3 CD
McGear – 1 CD
One Hand Clapping – 1 CD
Venus And Mars – 3 CD
Wings At The Speed Of Sound – 2 CD
Wings Over America – 3 CD
Holly Days – 1 CD
London Town – 2 CD (will include the Rupert stuff)
Back To The Egg – 1 CD
Last Flight – 2 CD
McCartney II – 3 CD
Tug Of War – 1 CD
Pipes Of Peace – 1 CD
Give My Regards To Broad Street – 2 CD
Press To Play – 2 CD
Choba B CCCP – 1 CD
Flowers In The Dirt – 4 CD
Tripping The Live Fantastic – 3 CD
Unplugged – 1 CD
Off The Ground – 2 CD
Up Close – 1 CD
Paul Is Live – 2 CD
Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest – 1 CD
Flaming Pie – 2 CD
Rushes – 2 CD
Run Devil Run – 2 CD (2nd disc will be all live, including the Cavern & PETA concerts)
Liverpool Sound Collage – 1 CD
Driving Rain – 2 CD
Back In The US/World – 2 CD (hybrid that includes every track plus Matchbox soundcheck from Best Buy bonus DVD)
Chaos And Creation In The Backyard – 1 CD
Twin Freaks – 2 CD (will include all the Wingspan remixes plus other remixes from this era, like Noir & Kruse and Radioslave)
Memory Almost Full – 2 CD
Live In LA – 1 CD
Electric Arguments – 2 CD
Good Evening New York City – 2 CD
Kisses On The Bottom – 2 CD (basically, the iTunes version with the live concert)
New – 2 CD
So far the albums covered have been the four disc ‘Flowers In The Dirt ‘ and three disc ‘Venus And Mars ‘, wogblog has more on these.
On an unrelated note the same label has put out a 3 disc collection of George rarities.

What are Holly Days, Last Flight and Up Close?
My uncle has a copy of McGear that used to belong to Jimi Hendrix. I forget the back story but he bought it at auction a few years ago.

@Joe, Holly Days was a 1977 Denny Laine album of Buddy Holly covers. It was produced by Paul, who also played and did backing vocals on most of the tracks.
Last Flight I should imagine are the last recordings by Wings.
Up Close was a McCartney live/TV show from the Ed Sullivan Theatre in December 1992.

‘Last Flight‘ is the name of a bootleg release of Wings Apollo Theatre show in Glasgow on December 17th 1979 as well as tracks from the Concert for Kampuchea, Wings last ever concert appearance (29th December). Paul recorded the show himself, planning to one day release it. The only track to surface from Glasgow 1979 so far is ‘Coming Up ‘ which was issued as a b-side of ‘Coming Up ‘ in April 1980.
Its a really good show and well worth hearing.

Awesome, those are great albums. Can’t wait. So Bad and Here Today are two of my favorite songs.

Love both of those tracks. I could easily take both of these albums, compile a first rate one disc album and throw the rest in the bin. Almost all of ‘PoP’ is garbage and if i never hear the duets on both albums i’d still want compensation for having suffered them previously.
Will be interesting to see what additional material Paul includes and where as the recording sessions for ‘PoP’ recede back into ‘Tug Of War ‘.
