I just bought the 4cd, one dvd ram edition and at first listened to thrillington. I love it. I think it sounds great in it’s jazzy instrumental style. GReat to listen while you do something else. I listen to it right now. Is there anything similar with other paul, george, john or beatles albums? That would be great. HAve you eaver listened to thrillington? Do you like it?

I wanted to get it but refuse to be forced into paying £68 or whatever it is for the set, expecially when you can get the first 2 discs for less than a tenner. I get annoyed whenever the topic of Ram comes up as i hate being ripped off. If this is how the rest of the remasters come then sorry Paul but you aint getting my money, I’ll pay over the odds for the Beatles but everything else can get lost and that includes solo.

I listened to Thrillington on YouTube, and I enjoyed it. Only one listen so far, need to have another go.

This is kinda nice, really enhances the melodicism and song construction of the “Ram ” material. Interesting arrangements with unusual instrumentation and a squeaky-clean, fat production. Progressive but easy-listening but (gently)-rocking jazzy little tunes, given a little tweaking in the studio to give the whole thing a nice little studio rock-era sheen. A few first impressions:
-Oddly swirling background vocals on the coda of “Too Many People ” – mildly reminiscent of “I Am The Walrus “
-Big-band blues that momentarily turns funky makes for a surprising version of “3 Legs “. Great horns here (and throughout)
-“Smile Away ” and “Monkberry Moon Delight ” – almost a swing-jazz version of what Paul probably thought of as hard-rocking songs. Guica!
-“Dooby-doo wah!”-style wordless backing vocals on “Heart Of The Country ” and “Dear Boy ” are so idiotically cheerful and mindless and genteel-perky to react at with anything other than a smile.
-“Eat At Home ” is ska or bluebeat or something like that. Nice!
Other tunes I’ll have to listen to again a few times to get a better impression of, but this is a nice entertaining bit of ear-candy. Great recording job too, with just enough weird sounds and effects to keep me reassured. I can’t imagine I’ll want to listen to it more than a dozen times (doubt I’d ever PAY for it, unlike Ram itself which I’ve already bought twice) but I’m glad I’ve heard it nonetheless. (Even if it’s as much a tribute to the efforts of arranger Richard Hewson than our Paul)
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Realised earlier today that whilst I had had most of this hadn’t played it all the way thru. Its a very enjoyable fun listen – and totally off the wall at times.
Who on earth would listen to ‘Ram ‘ and think to adapt it into an easy listening jazz kind of album.

I love Thrillington . It’s really calming so I like to listen to it when I’m studying or doing homework, and also it has no words so it isn’t distracting.

A friend gave me this and it’s easily one of the weirdest ideas Paul ever had, but I’m glad he did! I really like the mix, some inspired panning and orchestration. Herbie Flowers plays bass on it, of all people! Very tasty.

I wasn’t aware this was on the Ram box set. I did notice the Thrillington CD itself (if you want to buy only Thrillington ) is at least 30 dollars everywhere you look, so I bought it on iTunes instead. I’m hearing it now.
I don’t know why I overlooked this until now. I knew it existed.

I wasn’t aware either. And at $30, that’s just crazy talk. Its nice music, but it ain’t no RAM.
Hopefully you picked up Thrillintgon in iTunes for about $9.99. That’s a decent price.

You had to buy the uber deluxe box that came with the book, pictures of sheep, 100% woolly gloves and jar of mint sauce to get ‘Thrillington ‘.

I love Thrillington ! I listen to it when I’m in the mood for Ram and instrumental music at the same time. As far as other music like this, there’s Paul’s Working Classical which has orchestral versions of some of his songs. There’s also some originals on there as well. I definitely recommend that if you’re looking for more Thrillington .

Yes, that is what I paid. I don’t buy digital music very often, but I will purchase it if it is the best option available, or if I just need one or two songs.
I’m cheap. I just listen to it on YouTube…. Haven’t even bothered downloading it from YouTube…..

I received the CD reissue of Thrillington today. For those who are interested, it sounds the same as the iTunes album that was already available. Apparently it was remastered in 2012 and only released digitally until now (and as part of the deluxe RAM box).
Still, it’s nice to have it on CD with the booklet.

As usual I’m 40+ years behind, and probably somewhat exceptionally have recently acquired Thrillington before even hearing Ram . So, innocent ears really. I think it’s a real hoot, catchy tunes that really swing with arrangements somewhere between big band jazz and Ray Conniff. All a little surreal. Time to hit Ram now…….
PS: Thrillington will be released again on vinyl soon apparently.
