Great cover, weak album. I actually like “Big Barn Bed” but I think it would have been better suited as the outro to a song than a song in itself.I’m pretty sure I’m practically the only one, but I always liked “One More Kiss” – probably the melody and the chord progression. Except for little fragments here and there, there’s really nothing else I’d put on a playlist.
I too like ‘One More Kiss’, soppy romantic Paul but its got a nice vibe. Nothing substantial but its pleasant with some nice guitar work. Its one of those tracks where if Paul had kept it going for another minute or two (a tendency he did have with some numbers) it would have been insufferable, that its just 2 1/2 minutes long significantly helps it.

Everything is down to personal taste. I love ‘Little lamb Dragonfly’ and have it on a playlist. I’ve been acquainted with it for must be 40 odd years and never tire of listening to it…….
Ya, I noticed I only kept 4 songs on my iPod from that album.
One More Kiss, Little Lamb Dragonfly, When The Night, and the Medley (Hold Me Tight ) from this thread, so I like this song enough to have kept it.
I like most of Macca/Wings stuff from 1970-1978

Listened to this through again, well mostly.
‘Little Lamb Dragonfly’ really does grow on you the more you hear it. Still dont care about ‘Big Barn Bed’.
Still cannot stand ‘Hold Me Tight ‘; boring repetitive garbage. Of the entire album that was the only time I skipped ahead. The little section of ‘Power Cut’ where Paul sings “I may never tell you, but baby you should know” has stuck in my head and will not leave.

I actually think LLDF is one of Paul’s best. I don;’t know what the lyrics are all about but Paul does and he feels it……For me his best heartfelt singing along with ATMP at the Concert for George and a couple of Here today’s

Cant remember the influence of ‘Dragonfly’ but the “i cannot help you little lamb” section was when Paul came across a badly injured lamb on his farm which couldn’t be saved.
If i ignore the opening track and two closing numbers I quite like this album. Torn whether or not I prefer the album cut with the brass overdubs or the outtake without.

My motto is, “the brassier the merrier”. I like the touch of brass; it’s only for a few seconds, it won’t hurt anyone…
Two songs that rarely get mentioned from that album are “When the Night” and “Only One More Kiss” — the latter I especially like from among Paul’s supposedly “minor” efforts.

so, i finally got to red rose speedway in my chronological listening of the solo stuff. i’ve listened to it 3 times all the way through now. and i love this album. it’s freaking great. i am kinda thinking of it as one flowing mass all together not really much as individual songs yet, but each of the songs individually are great. there are fantastic songs in there and there isn’t one i don’t like. is it better than ram? that’s hard for me to say but does it stand on it’s own? absolutely. i’m not gonna go into bigger reviews for my favourites, but i will say my favourites are probably big barn red, loup and when the night.
———————————–
i made notes on each song on my last listen through. i’ll paste them in:
big barn bed- a nice opener with a solid build up in the beginning. really got me dancing
my love- a really nice romantic song with that stays mostly slow but with peaks and valleys. and right when you think it’s over, the peak is at the end and it’s really nice.
get on the right thing-this song is more up tempo and louder than my love, it was the kind of song i was expecting after big barn bed. maybe not as many instruments used but it feels bigger than the last one and the choir singing the title is a really nice touch
one more kiss-a sweet country-style love song. reminds me of something out of ram
little lamb dragonfly- nice intro. the ‘la’s about a minute and a half in remind me of the horns in Golden Slumbers a little bit. some bits of this song also remind me of ram with more production into it. there’s a lot of instruments in it, but it somehow keeps a cozy feeling which is nice
single pigeon- i like how it’s just a sweet piano song that builds to drums and then harmonies and in and out. it stays simple but gives me chills. the horns towards the end pull me out of that, but still nice
when the night- starts with sweet romantic guitar and just feels so pretty. feels so right. a really lovely romantic song. i kinda drift off a little into it like i’m with something wonderful that’s slightly out of reach but i can grab it at the same time. thinking about how this song made me feel and going deep into it, letting it take me away almost brought a tear to my eye. it’s nice.
loup- this one starts off a distant feeling. makes me feel like i’m watching something fade off in the distance. and then it gets slow and there’s odd sounds. makes me feel like i’m the one being watched now. and then it goes back to the distant feeling of the beginning. it is a beautiful piece that makes me feel relaxed and uneasy at the same time. it’s great.
medley- having a medley made me think that paul’s trying to echo Abbey Road . and maybe he was, but at the same time it feels like he by doing a medley in his new wings style is saying “Look At Me now, look how much i’ve changed. i’m not that same lad from 4 years ago. i’ve moved on from the break up. i’ve picked myself up and doing my own thing. it was a great time and there’s nothing wrong with the occasional look back, but there’s so much more to do, so much to see, who knows where we can go. come on, let’s have some more fun.” or he just mashed a bunch of smaller songs together and said “i wanna take the time with these and put them on the album too but we’re not doing the double anymore and i wanna get them out now still. what do i do? medley!”. i do like the medley, i think the songs are really nice and the end is fantastic. but i feel like he’s trying to say more with it than what the songs individually are saying.
———————————————————————————————-
in the end, i thought red rose speedway was awesome. has a great flow to it. at bits it reminded me of ram and past works, but it also made me look ahead and made me excited for what paul did after this. but, next up in my chronological listening is george’s living in the material world.

The songs on that album I can actually stand listening to are My Love and Little Lamb Dragonfly. The others are unbearable.I can see why Paul was labeled as the “sappy love song poet” after I listened to this album.
Yeah, “Loup (1st Indian on the Moon)” is total schmaltz… unlike “My Love.” Are you kidding me?

Red Rose Speedway is a pile of crap! My Love is the only good song on it. I really like that song. The rest is bloody awful.
If I were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring one album with me, it would be Revolver.
I just hope that I would have some means of playing it. Ha ha!

This could be the Paul album where the more you hear the songs the worse they get. ‘My Love’ and ‘Little Lamb Dragonfly’ are the only two I will search and will deliberately listen to, the rest veers from tolerable to I’d rather be tortured with barb wire, salt and sandpaper.

Funny how we react to songs…….I can see why songs like ‘My Love’ are well regarded……Personally it’s ‘OK’ish’
I’ve never listened much to Loop ….
As a whole I’m very fond of RRS. Little Lamb might be one of Paul’s best 20 or 30 songs…..
Looking through the tack listing now side one is all good……
Side two……. only Loop makes the side lag ………..
Love the simple songs….Single Pigeon and in the medley Power Cut. It’s funny I’d forgotten about ‘When the Night’ but it slipped onto a playlist and I quite like it now.
For me RRS is a nice album……I like it better than Egypt Station……
One point……. It’s noticeable how Paul here and elsewhere later in his career tried to construct a medley like the one on Abbey Road ……Paul is obviously the main contributor to the AR medley…..And it’s star…….Yet after listening to Paul’s later medleys I’ve come to consider that Lennon’s contributions were more vital to the AR medley than I’d thought.

I agree with Wigwam. There’s not really any songs on this album I find too terrible, although if Loup was cut I wouldn’t miss it too much. Personally I love Get On The Right Thing, and When The Night, and of course the Medley.
My Love is okay but it might be my second least favorite track on the album above Loup. I never really fancied it when I first heard it as the closer to my first Paul CD (All The Best (US), and I didn’t care for it following the opener on RRS. Although now that I’ve become a bit older, some of the softer stuff is growing on me, so now I appreciate the song more, but it’s not the first track I’d pick from the album.

Listening to this again for Paul’s bday and I’m finding it hard to understand why I disliked it when I originally listened to it. I think I was in my “Paul’s solo career is mostly boring fluff” phase at the time. To be sure, I wasn’t wholly wrong about the fluff part, but… since then… I must confess… I’ve grown to really like Paul’s fluff.

I love how Ram On (Reprise) fades out with ”whos that coming round that corner?” Then opens Red Rose Speedway on Big Barn Bed with the same line. The chorus and harmonies of Big Barn Bed are the perfect resolution to that melody. I wish he’d done the same with the fadeout of Hot As Sun (Glasses) as that’s one of my favorite Paul melodies ever.
