Listened to this for the second time yesterday. The first time I heard it I thought it was rubbish. I’ve revised my opinion since then — I still think it’s rubbish, but in a good way; I can see why folk like it, it’s got a nice laid-back mellow feel. The countryside mood reminds me of Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother , which is also mellow rubbish but one of my favourite PF albums.

And on the third listen everything will come together, and you will think it is one of the most genius albums of all time. At least that is what happened to me.
Paul had access to a full studio arsenal, and he puts it to magnificent use. I’ve probably listened to Ram more than other other album besides Abbey Road and The White Album .

Some bits certainly do sound like the Beach Boys . ‘Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey ‘, strangely enough, rather reminds me of the mellow yet experimental post-psychedelic Pink Floyd. Or perhaps it reminds me of a couple of Floyd tracks where they’re trying to be Brian Wilson… I’m not sure.

Listened to RAM again this morning before school. It’s certainly one of the better McCartney solo albums I’ve heard overall. I’m not really a fan of Smile Away , but I just noticed that it has some really cool synthesizers. I think RAM is one of those albums where I think most of the songs are just average, but there are little bits of those songs that I absolutely love!!For instance, I think Long Haired Lady is pretty average, except for the part that Linda sings at the beginning, which I love.

I count Wings and JPM solo as different. If you put Wings in there my fav is probably Red Rose Speedway .

Interesting. ‘Pipes Of Peace ‘ would be on my top 5 Paul albums to delete from existence.

I hate Ram and always will. The songs are just silly, and not likable to me. (Says a person who thinks McCartney II is one of his best )

McCartney II is one of Paul’s best – but that’s coming from someone who adores ‘Wild Life ‘ and hates ‘New’.

This.
I confess, I’ve finally given in to the RAM love… it’s hard not to love something you just got on vinyl and also, it really is a cool album! I’m glad I gave it second and third chances. (I usually have to — I had to give ATMP about half a dozen listens before I realised why everyone praises it so much.)
Expert Textpert opined
I’ve always loved RAM since the first listen. It deserves a lot more praise than it gets.
I don’t know about that. Seems to me that it’s pretty well-loved among the fan community — every other fan I run across says, ‘RAM is my favourite Macca LP!’ or at least in their top three. (I suppose that means I now count as every other fan, myself.)

‘Ram ‘ is a great album however I remain staunchly of the opinion that it would be so much better if a few of the tracks had been snipped in length: the coda of ‘”The Back Seat Of My Car ‘ should have been lopped off; ‘Monkberry Moon Delight ‘ and ‘Long Haired Lady/Love Is Long’ should have faded sooner.
I’ve probably posted this before but the multi-tracks of ‘Monkberry Moon Delight ‘ are out there and the isolated vocals especially have to be heard.

It does go on a bit. But the first two or three minutes of the songs are quite good!
That’s one fab thing about the earlier stuff, is that they had to work within the rigorous confines of the two-minute pop song, so each second packed a lot of punch. The more time you have, the more danger there is of getting self-indulgent.

Long Haired Lady is one of my all time favorite songs. It is like Happiness Ia A Warm Gun or Uncle Albert /Admiral Halsey in its unique A,B, and C sections. The Linda solo at the beginning I love, and the “who’s the lady?” section is one of my favorite pieces of music period.
