The biggest omissions seem to be Flowers In The Dirt songs. I know that’s up next in the archive reissue series, but it seems odd not to whet people’s appetites here. Also, considering how often Paul slags off Bip Bop in interviews, it’s surprising how often it gets included in his compilations. Is it really the best song on Wild Life ? Why include that and We All Stand Together rather than Call Me Back Again, Hope Of Deliverance, Helen Wheels, or even C Moon?
Personally I’m hoping this is a Love/Twin Freaks -style mashup, or a bunch of re-recordings, rather than a conventional compilation.

I agree with Joe. No song off Flowers In The Dirt ? That was the album designed to be THE comeback album to back up his world tour after years of relative inactivity. Also, no “Monkberry Moon Delight “???
Could live without New, Early Days , The Songs We Were Singing Bip Bop,…

Yeah, I guess you’re right. And there are glaring omissions… I could make a great compilation playlist. *shrugs*
I got excited for it at first but now….
The thing with compilation albums is that they can only contain so many songs. It becomes hard to get every good song on there. You can talk about songs they should put on the album for ages until you end up with a complete works box set. Ultimately it’s just a compilation album, and it’s all just a bunch of songs that you’ve already heard and can listen to anytime without buying the album along with the songs that you think should have been on it.

So if there’d been room for ONE MORE song, which one would you have added?
For me (at the obvious risk of repeating myself), “Monkberry Moon Delight ” – and you?

Beware My Love, probably. Though Call Me Back Again would also be a strong contender.
Both should have been on it. The track selection is utterly bizarre and deeply flawed.

@meanmistermustard
Thanks for including The Lovers That Never Were. I do also wonder if there’s an Elvis Costello thing going on. The 2 had a number of really good songs.
In a retrospective sampling, you’d think ONE of their collaborations would have made it. A contract/label issue?
However, I don’t think presence on Wingspan should take a song out of consideration on a 4 CD retrospective – unless you consciously decide not to duplicate ANY songs.

Others would think the same as yourself @Into the Sky with Diamonds but in my eyes I don’t see the need or point of almost replicating the whole double cd on here. All or almost all of the first disc (the hits) is going to appear and, for me, unless ‘Wingspan’ is removed from the market there has to be a good handful of tracks that don’t overlap or why have both existing.
I will very much be the exception tho when it comes to that view.
Who knows why none of the tracks written along with Elvis Costello appear but even if there was a reason (contractual, rift) you’d think one of the other tracks would have made it on from ‘Flowers In The Dirt ‘. ‘This One’ and ‘Put It There’ are both very good songs and could have been selected as representatives from ‘FITD’.
Unless Paul releases another compilation this is going to be the collection that sums up his career as a musician and some of the selections made are flawed, lacking, bizarre and just awful.

I agree. So, there’s really one possible solution: he has to stick around for at least another 20 years and do a proper compilation someday.

Considering how prolific Paul’s output has been over the past 40 years, by the time he has released twenty years’ worth of further musics, a proper compilation won’t be able to fit on two CD; it’ll have to be a four-disk box set or something.

You could argue that a 2-cd set isn’t able to fit a proper McCartney compilation at the moment.

Depends on what you mean proper.
I’d argue all day long that ‘Hope For The Future ‘ should be thrown in a vat of nuclear waste so no trace of its foul existence remains.

I always thought that McCartney’s only weakness was not being to distinguish his good stuff from the bad.
But I realize from the posts on this Forum that a number of songs I consider bad are well liked by a number of forumpuddlians.
So who would be in the best position to create a compilation?
WE WOULD!
We should create a thread where we rank his songs as we did for Beatle songs. (But do we have enough members familiar with his catalog…)
The top 67 would be our suggested retrospective.
