Here’s me seeing things when they aren’t really there.
Yesterday when I was listening to the song Angry from this album, it hit me that Paul could be talking about/reflecting on the break up with John in 1970.
What the hell gives you the right to tell me what to do with my life
Especially when you made a mess of every chance you had of success.
Look at you…Just look at you, I said I’m angry just looking at you.I’m sick and tired of sitting back and listening
To all of your clap-trap.
If you could get me to take the rap I guarantee
You’d leave me with a backslap.
Push me to the left, push me to the right,
Try to take me out of the way.
Even if you kick me off the edge of the world,
You’re still going to hear me say… (chorus)I can’t begin to tell you all the reasons
Why you’re making me crazy.
I’ve got so many answers.
Like you’re stupid, like you’re crooked,
Like you’re lazy.
Hit me with your left, hit me with your right,
Hit me from the top to the toe.
Even when you chew me up and spit me out,
I’m still going to want to know. (chorus)

I played this thru 6 months or so back and it wasnt as bad as i remembered it to be tho i did find it overproduced.
Can’t say anything was particularly memorable; ‘Good Times Coming/Feel The Sun’ being one of the better ones tho the lyrics are pretty weak. ‘Footprints’ is nice but the alternate mix (posted earlier) is so much better as its got room to breathe instead of being buried under all the additional bits and bobs Paul added. Can’t listen to ‘Press’ as i don’t want to hear how Paul and Linda need some relief (“Maybe we should have a secret code, before we both get ready to explode. When you want me to love you, just tell me to press.”). Sorry Paul but no. ‘Talk More Talk’ still irritated the hell out of me and whilst ‘Angry’ is catchy Paul is so far from convincing in his delivery its laughable.

It’s a shame the production is so wretched on “Press To Play ” as i always felt there were a lot of really good ideas on this album.

This morning while listening to Only Love Remains, I kept thinking that content-wise it is like the mature sibling of You Like Me Too Much .

To respond to the posts 3 years ago I skimmed, I actually really enjoy the production of Press To Play . It’s one of those things that grows on you.
Anyway, my real reason for tracking this thread down is because I recently bought this album on CD. I bought the original 1986 one which expected is slightly different than the ’93 master I’m used to from the digital music platforms. However the song Press was vastly different. It was a whole different mix. Turns out some copies of the original have the 10″ mix on them.

@William Shears Campbell, do you have the same one I do? Mine has the different mix of Press, and the booklet was made in the USA, but the CD was made in the UK. Apparently it’s a rare CD that goes for around 30 dollars to collectors.
I’ve probably never heard the original version of Press.

Yeah, I read that it was rare. If it goes for $30 I feel bad for the poor soul on Discogs that sold it to me. I got it for about $10 including shipping!
I believe we have the same one then. This is my first time hearing the alternate version of “Press”, and I like the original better. It’s quite a bit sharper. I highly recommend checking it out. It’ll heighten your opinion of the song

Lately I’ve been listening to the “specialty reissue” albums on the Internet Archive site as opposed to YouTube. It’s a little tidier and makes it easy to quickly review and compare the different versions of a song. Also the album covers, inserts, and LP/CD reproductions are available in the JPEG section under Download Options.

It’s *really* hard to get past that production. A lot of Paul’s 80s songs suffer from that.
And I’ve said it elsewhere, but that incredibly lazy video for “Press” soured me on that album and Paul in particular for years.

I absolutely adore that video.
I love the video too! Partly because the song is so (uncharacteristically) directly sexual, and the whole video is him exposing himself (no pun intended) to direct public contact. Also, his reactions and the reactions of the people around him are so sweet! I desperately want to be that woman who gives him a shoulder rub
I think it’s really interesting the production is such a barrier for ye. I wonder if it’s because that production was so normal when I was a kid that I don’t really notice? (I was 7 when it came out).

I’m guilty of assuming everything is about him and John unless proven otherwise I’d imagine he had a lot to process after John died, and anger would definitely be part of it.
I agree about the performance though. I’m not sure he’s constitutionally capable of letting go control enough to really perform this song.
