It’s got some good stuff. I really like “Hope of Deliverance” (very under-appreciated) and “Lovers that never were” (tremendous Elvis Costello lyrics), and there are other songs that are pleasant.
the title song would be really good but for the la-la-la-las, and “Biker Like an Icon” falls a bit short as a rocker.
Any songs that grab you?

“C’mon, People” is hands down my favorite from this album. “Golden Earth Girl” (a sort of thematic companion piece to “Mother Nature’s Son ” ) and “I Owe It All to You” are quite underrated as well. I don’t know why this album received largely indifferent reviews; it’s just as good as Flowers In The Dirt , if not better, IMO (Flowers‘ main flaw is that some of its songs sound still sound a little too, er, ‘Eighties’ to my ears, e.g. “We Got Married;” “Don’t Be Careless, Love;” “Motor of Love;” etc.).

While I haven’t got around to listening to this one yet I have heard quite a few tracks off it and like them quite a lot. I must say I didn’t feel the same when I first heard most, so for some reason they took a while for me to grow to like them; I’m not sure if this affected the initial reception of the album or not. It was also the cheapest one I bought when I was on my ‘catching up’ drive last year.

I think its a great album.
The Lovers That Never Were is one of my fave Paul songs ever; great lyrics, fantastically recorded and the tendency of Paul’s to have crappy backing vocals shoved on for no reason is mostly absent (as they are for most of this album bar Off The Ground , no surprises its one of the weakest tracks overall – i’ve been listening to Paul’s 80’s stuff up to FITD and those horrid echoing calls hurt a lot of songs).
Other faves are Hope Of Deliverance (can any Paul fan not love this?), Peace In The Neighbourhood (wait, another with pointless echoing vocals, still can overlook it as its not slavered over), Winedark Open Sea and C’mon People. Cosmically Conscious, tacked on to the end of C’mon People as a hidden track, is fun and perfect in its length having been trimmed down by 3 minutes (reminding me of Dig It ).
Biker Like An Icon is sloppy lyrics Paul. Boooo!! Its ok, passing quickly. The video, well one of them, is pretty interesting portraying the story than than just Paul on camera somewhere singing – in this one Paul’s not even in it!

At 3:55 in this song, there is a sound that sounds like R2D2 to me. If I got this right, the video should start just a few seconds before that sound happens.

Yeah overall I like Off The Ground . That is actually Paul’s, linda’s, and the band he used to record feet on the album cover. They recorded the songs live instead of overdubbing each instrument on different tracks which gives the album a nice raw sound; which I think is the difference from that 80’s sound mentioned above from Flowers In The Dirt .
Cosmically Conscious was actually written back in 1968 in India. Has the vibe and lyrical topic off what they were doing there with TM and the Maharishi. Also Peace in the Neighborhood is him definitely reflecting on the peace movement and counterculture of the 60’s. I always thought the lines, “BEST THING I EVER SAW WAS A MAN WHO LOVED HIS WIFE. IN A PLACE WHERE THINGS WERE GOOD I FELT PEACE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD” were possibly a reference to John and his love for Yoko.

Yeah I hear what your talking about. I think its right at 3:58. I think it might be whistling or bird chirping but does have a similar sound sequence to what R2D2 says or meeps lol.

Was Off The Ground remastered in January of this year, or was it just reissued? Amazon has it listed as a remaster, but people are arguing about whether it really is or not.
I need to know whether to order this version or just pick up a copy in my local used cd store.

As far as i was aware it turned out to be a reissue not a remaster, the same with ‘Yellow Submarine Songtrack which was reported as being a remaster but wasn’t.
Far more interesting were the reports that Paul had re-recorded the whole album.

Yeah, I fell for the Submarine Songtrack bit. At least the digipak matches my other CDs.

Hope of Deliverance – A masterpiece if you ask me; great pop music, good lyrics (“From the darkness that surrounds us” -wow), and above all a song built on maybe five chords only (two pairs of relative chords and a fifth one if I remember well, it’s been a while since I figured out how to play it); once more, less is more, the art of doing great things with very little.

Is there hope of deliverance from the darkness that is within us? Oh, wait, that question belongs in the Was John Haunted by his Inner Emptiness thread.

‘Hope Of Deliverance’ is one of Paul’s greatest songs. An incredibly positive lyric and message that folk can look to (and do) and not once does Paul fall into laziness or content filler – not that we should overlook the fact that we would be going along with Paul’s plan. The question is is the plan getting the deliverance from the darkness or how we go about getting the deliverance from the darkness?
Which all brings to mind Paul’s stance in ‘We Can Work It Out ‘.

That’s one of the songs that can get stuck in my head. Did I go ahead and click to listen? Yep, I did. We will see how many days it sticks around this time around. Good thing I like the song.
