Memory Almost Full is the only Paul album I own… hopefully that will change soon. It’s a great album though. I especially like See Your Sunshine (first solo Paul song I ever heard, apparently we used to listen to it on the way to preschool) and Mr Bellamy.

I have the free Daily Mail* version which I listened to a couple of times and my instant reaction then was Dance Tonight is great, the rest, meh. Dug it out last week on a whim as a result of playing McCartney III a lot and have listened to it around four times; and with familiarity it’s definitely a grower. I’m liking it more with each listen, but like most McCartney it tends towards the jaunty ‘thumbs up’ and what John unkindly described as “Paul’s Granny $hit”. Maybe a bit more maturity and developing a wider listening palette has helped my appreciation a bit as well.
* I chucked it in the bin on exiting the petrol station, I’d be too embarrassed to be caught with it, but for 50p for a McCartney album you couldn’t fail!

Thank you for giving the album another go. I love it. The only song I might be tempted to skip is Nod Your Head.

Initially I was disappointed after the brilliant ‘chaos and creation’ but over time I’ve grown to really enjoy a lot of the tracks. I dislike the way the songs are sequenced somehow, so I’ve put together my own version.
My favourite is ‘see your sunshine’. Serious steely dan vibes from that one. ‘ever present past’ is pop genius too.
As an aside Paul asked Thom Yorke from Radiohead to contribute the piano part on ‘Mr Bellamy’ but he declined as he didn’t think he could play the part.

This is another great McCartney album. The crown jewel for me is Only Mama Knows, closely followed by Ever Present Past, Mr Bellamy, House of Wax and The End Of The End .
Nod Your Head I like, but it’s weirdly placed. The End Of The End feels like the true finale and Nod Your Head coming after it always seemed to me like it is a bonus or hidden track.

In the deluxe edition version that has the interview, Paul says that he placed Nod Your Head at the end so that the album wouldn’t end with the song about death. He figured people would want to listen to it again if it ended on a happier note.

Thanks for the info. That sounds reasonable on paper, but to me TEITE just sounds much more like a finale, which makes Nod Your Head sound more like a hidden track. Also Nod Your Head has a slightly similar style to an earlier song on the album, That Was Me. So because of that Nod Your Head, although good, has always been a bit of an outsider for me on Memory Almost Full .
In addition to the many great songs, has anybody ever heard the theory that the title is an anagram of My Soulmate LLM? I think I’ve read that Macca has neither confirmed nor denied this to be the intentional album title, but I’d like to think of it as the true idea behind it.

I think it was meant to sound like a hidden track. I made a point a while back about how a similar phenomenon exists on Help ! where the album closes with Dizzy Miss Lizzy instead of Yesterday . I theorized it was for a similar reason.

I have not heard that, however, I have heard that something with Mr. Bellamy is supposed to be an anagram of Heather Mills or something like that.

“There was a lot of speculation about the album’s title, with many people pointing out that it was an anagram of “for my soulmate LLM” (LLM being Linda Louise McCartney). At first, Paul was enigmatic about whether or not this had influenced his decision, before eventually claiming it to be a mysterious, but happy, accident. “

That’s almost a tiny bit disappointing, I liked thinking of it as an intention which he doesn’t need to “confess”. 🙂
But I’ll continue loving the album anyway, currently Flaming New Memory Chaos and Creation McCartney Pie Almost Full in the Backyard III is my second favourite Paul album after Ram …

I’m really enjoying this album today. It’s usually Mr Bellamy that brings me back to it, but there’s a lot I enjoy.
Only Mama Knows feels full of meaning that’s just out of reach
Ever Present Past is a bop
It occurred to me this evening that the ‘you’ in Gratitude might be his fans.
The line “I know that I’m not a square as long as they’re not around” in Feet In The Clouds makes me so sad

I have been recently enjoying “That Was Me”. It’s such a fun rocker that also makes me feel nostalgic.

Memory Almost Full makes a great second disc to Chaos and Creation almost forming a double album and I always like the quirky stuff like Mr. Bellamy.
It does have a sort of valedictory feel hanging over it with the nostalgia of Ever Present Past and That Was Me, and especially End of the End, but then of course there’s a rebirth with New.
