My red vinyl (2492/3000) finally arrived today.
I’ve heard a lot of people criticizing all the different versions of this album, that’s it’s a money grab and all that. And I’m sure it is. But it also reminds me of Paul’s artitic side, and the way they released the White Album – like it was a work of art, with the plain white cover and the number on the front. IIRC, Paul was heavily involved in that decision. I could see all these different variations and limited editions appealing to Paul’s artistic bent. And IMO it is a very clean, elegant design, with the die on the cover and the different colors available.

I’ve listened to the first 4 songs so far
Long Tailed Winter Bird
Find My Way
Pretty Boys
Women and Wives
and I like every one. Sure, sometimes his voice isn’t as great as it used to be, and maybe there isn’t a “special” song that clearly rises above the rest, but these four are engrossing to me as long as I stop **expecting** and just let them wash through me.
I’ll re-listen with lyrics on the screen, because I didn’t always catch them.

That’s pretty much what I think about the album. It’s a pretty strong collection, but there isn’t that one killer track or song that stands out, in the album or in Paul’s career. I think Kiss of Venus comes the closest to being memorable, just because it has such a strong melody.

I’m back here to let y’all know…
*Drum Roll*
…that I f&@*ing love this album. Chaos & Creation, Memory Almost Full , New and now this – whoever thinks Macca ‘solo’ was great in the 70s only is missing out. I enjoy every song, Pretty Boys and Women & Wives are the ‘weakest’ (still good), the rest I love. My fav is probably Deep Down, Slidin’ is badass, Kiss of Venus is beautiful, When Winter Comes reminds me totally of RAM (enhanced by the lyrics about farm and stuff) and Deep Deep Feeling is really special when I truly engage in it.

Interesting that Paul said Women and Wives was his favorite track. That’s the type of thing that can change day to day though. There was a stretch last week when Pretty Boys was stuck in my head for three or four days straight. The subject seems odd, but you can’t help but think Paul’s being labeled “the cute one” contributed to him writing it.

I like Slidin’ and Find My Way AND Lavatory Lil for tremendous anti-Heather Mills lyrics that would have made Lennon proud. Right out of “How Do You Sleep?”
Winterbird could have used some editing…

That’s just what I thought – I imagined him watching his daughter Mary photograph people, models probably, and harkening back to his youthful days as a Pretty Boy whom the cameras loved.

I confess to having been a little disappointed by it so far but ‘deep deep feeling’ is amazing, just an incredibly produced track. You listen to it then you want to immediately play it again because you cant quite work out what happened there and how it developed.
Some of the more acoustic based tracks are ok, but Pauls voice has deteriorated a fair bit. There aren’t too many memorable individual tracks on here compared to his previous 2 albums, but it flows together quite well.

I’m surprised some people are disappointed in it. I actually think it’s one of his better albums, more consistent than most. It’s true his voice has suffered, but he still gets his ideas across. Nothing wrong with being 78, beats the alternative.

Yeah, and about the whole voice thing – I noticed his vocal aging mostly in YouTube videos of live performances, not on studio tracks. And not doing concerts since rockdown has done his voice an extra favour. He doesn’t do any gruff rockers like Monkberry Moon Delight or Old Siam Sir anymore, but he doesn’t have to. He’s still a great singer.
I actually think several of his “newer” albums are great and mostly consistent. Flaming Pie , Chaos and Creation, Memory Almost Full , NEW and now this are all great works for me.

With so many musicians doing their take on 2020 I was pleased to hear that Paul was doing a fully fledged iso album. A must have 2020 curio time piece by the master. It definitely captures the year’s melancholy feel. I bought the stock standard CD. Not for any other reason than I thought it was how my 2020 rolled. No frills. I have played it once. Has Christmas first album for the morning written all over it.

The sentence “Each color CD contains a unique secret bonus demo track ” is ambiguous; does each colour CD contain a unique secret bonus track exclusive to that colour or is it the same song just a difference colour or CD? Not that I’m buying 23 different versions of the same damn album.
According to ‘The Daily Beatle‘, in total it’s 4 different bonus tracks so for all four you need to buy all four different colour CDs.
Or you can wait wait a few months for the Craps box set where you get all four demos plus another three tracks, or wait another two months after that for the full Casino set where you all the tracks so far, two additional tracks exclusive to the box, a ‘Mc³’ speedo, a facsimile of a radiator, a mystery piece of vegan fruit, a code to a video of watching Paul playing Patience on his phone during Rockdown, a replica of a key Paul once used, a blank page out of one of the notepads used by Paul when writing the tracks, and the first two ingredients to Paul’s secret chocolate recipe (collect all 7 versions of the Casino box to get the full recipe).
At this point of Paul’s releases they will officially given up with sensible links to the merchandise and are just throwing in any old crap that comes to mind.
Literally laughed out loud.

I don’t think I posted my thoughts on this album when it came out, so I’ll say that I really enjoyed it! It’s nothing earth shattering, but a solid collection of well-written songs. I particularly liked ‘Long Tailed Winter Bird’, the acoustic guitar riffing is just so satisfying. It’s also cool that Paul completed the ‘McCartney’ trilogy, even though the last one was 40 years ago; makes me feel like I’m part of Beatles history listening to it while it’s still a new album.

He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.
