Offline Havent said it recently and a couple of LP non-likers have posted so why not repeat that I love this album from the opening to the closing. ‘Bogey Music’ and ‘Frozen Jap’ would be the ones i would highlight as the clunkers but even those i can easily enjoy and get into when playing the album thru. For me it just works and has done since i first heard it on vinyl when i was a young kid.
Same as with ‘Wild Life ‘.
I must be an odd Paul fan. Don’t get the hoopla for ‘New’ (God how i hate that title) or ‘Chaos and Creosote in the Front Living Room’, which most rave over with fierce devotion and hate ‘Jet ‘ yet adore ‘Wild Life ‘, ‘McCartney II ‘ and ‘With A Little Luck’.

I love With a Little Luck (and I’ve Had Enough). Especially the terrible video they shot for it which looks like your parents reliving their past at a boomers reunion (its so clunky and hilarious). Yet another single cut down for radio (like Coming Up but I’m not sure that suffered too much for it). Like you, @meanmistermustard I seem to be drawn to the odd experiments.
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 
but I may have to get more specific in the future.

The single edit of ‘With a Little Luck’ is horrible, one of the worst i’ve heard of those, as it cuts out most of the instrumental passages that draw me to the song in the first place (one such part reminding me of the theme tune for ‘Thomas The Tank Engine’).
The video is ghastly. Makes you want to hate the song.
The full ‘Coming up’ on the other hand i find is too long to the point where it begins to overstay its welcome, most of what got omitted being superfluous. Works far better in its 3:54 edit, tho i am glad Paul included it complete on one of the bonus discs of the remaster.

Offline I find myself laughing at that video honestly, everything about it is incredibly amateur. You seriously wouldn’t know it was one of the top draws in rock at the time, like a nightmare from the Top of the Pops. Linda’s relentless bouncing. The anonymous band members. The vaguely dancing audience who are a cross-section of department store fashion. The ghastly orange gel light on everything like a faded Kodak slide. The only thing recommending it is that it’s the edit and not the full song, imagine the instrumental parts in THAT. I’m just as glad the video for Coming Up is the edit, that would have been a drag, even as superior an effort it is compared to WALL.

Offline I might have been tempted to watch the ‘WALL’ (oooh, that spells wall) video if it was unedited. Even Paul in the opening clip looks awful with the face he is making. And the dancers, what song are they dancing too as it certainly doesn’t fit with ‘With A little Luck’?

Offline “With a Little Luck” to me sounds like bubble gum music like “Yummy Yummy Yummy I got Love in my Tummy” by the Ohio Express or anything by the 1910 Fruitgum Company.

Offline The full song has some nice instrumentals, it’s practically the best thing Linda ever got to do in the band, and the space makes sense of Paul’s returning vocals which in the edit makes you wonder why he’s so over the top. But if that video is your predominant memory, writing it off is probably an understandable reaction.

That, in a nutshell, is the story of ‘McCartney II ’, his quirky, synth heavy second solo album, released 35 years ago this weekend. In 1979, with Wings gradually disintegrating, McCartney sat alone at home in his farmhouse in East Sussex surrounded by some state-of-the-art equipment – new synths, sequencers, and a hired Studer 16-track tape machine. Offline So I did some googling around and came up with what is believed to be some of the equipment Paul used, which is of interest because this was all in the pre 80’s FM synth days with DX7’s etc:
- Yamaha CS-80 (also used on With A Little Luck) – very expensive and really heavy. Blade Runner sound track is practically all CS-80.
- ARP Pro-Soloist, designed as a lead instrument with organs!
- Roland Jupiter 4, the goto band synth in the 70’s
- Moog Minimoog Model D
- Unknown drum machines, sequencers
It’s believed by some that Paul made a tape loop from the Jupiter 4’s arppegiator for Temporary Secretary , but Paul said he loved sequencers and it could have been this one, as it would have worked fine with the Jupiter. Here is a pic which enabled gearheads to recognise some of the stuff:
That’s a Minimoog Model D next to the Soloist with the drink on it (compare here), but we don’t know what drum machines Paul used.

It’s the best Macca album ever in my opinion. Temporary Secretary is my favorite track from the album (It’s still stuck in my head). But the best track is Frozen Jap because you listen to it while your working on something.

Offline I like that one too. Waterfalls is the one that got under my skin. That aching sound in Paul’s vocal always brings be back to the pain of the early 80s.
Also thankful that he released a live version of Coming Up with unaltered vocals.

I don’t mind the vocals on that song. My complaint with that song is the lyrics; they’re sorta nonsensical and not in a fitting way imo.
