I think London Town is MUCH stronger than Egg. As I said, Egg has some great tunes (Getting Closer, Old Siam Sir, Spin It On, Arrow Through Me), I really like Baby’s Request, To You is ok…the rest is weak by Wings’ standards.
And MMM, whether you knew it before or not, it was supposed to be a concept album just as you said…they dumped that idea at the last moment but the feel of it is still there with the songs sequenced the way they are.

Re-listened to this again, along with a heap of alternates and outtakes, in my trawl thru Paul’s music releases.
The problem i have with it is summed up by the title song, there is some good stuff in there but also some utter garbage and because of that i don’t go back very often at all. That “toot, toot, toot” stuff is up there with pure Macca lazy s***e that should have been worked on until it was improved. Cafe On The Left Bank is another that could have been worked on and improved but wasn’t and so is a drag and too long.
I’m Carrying for the large part is fantastic but goes on a bit too long, Cuff Link is pointless uninteresting filler, Famous Groupies is a joke that i fail to find either funny or interesting.
The rest is good with Deliver Your Children having some lovely guitar work and all tracks i enjoy listening too. I have no idea what Morse Moose is doing on this album as its unlike anything else on it but its great when played loud.
As for the single from these sessions I’m biased towards Mull Of Kintyre for obvious reasons whilst Girls School is interesting musically but the lyrics are complete tripe and annoy the living daylights out of me – and it’s another song that is way too long.
Outtake-wise there is a gorgeous stripped early rough mix of Don’t Let It Bring You Down and an instrumental version of Morse Moose and The Grey Goose – no idea what the hell to make of that, its so bizarre. If anyone wants to hear it there is an Alternate London Town bootleg on youtube.

I think it’s fine, she looks decent IMO — kind of like Robert Plant. It’s Paul who’s making a derp face.
I’m listening to this album for the first time, and I’m quite liking it. For some reason, it feels like it has a similar vibe to George Harrison ‘s eponymous album (released the year after this album) — kind of mellow and tropical. I know part of it was actually recorded on a boat in the Virgin Islands, so maybe the ambience soaked into the recording?

The artwork is awful.
‘DLIBYD’ is beautiful in it’s circulating rough mix where it’s so sparse, can easily see Paul doing that live in a nice intimate setting where he sits in a corner being ignored by folk walking past for their coffee.
Going slightly off topic. There is a wonderful noticeably different alternate mix of ‘Girls School’ out there which has a more dirty feel to it which is more fitting for the song considering what the influence was for Paul.
I’m starting to think the rough mixes are generally better than what Paul officially released due to being burdened by overdubs and unrequired sweetening.

isn’t this the same mix that appeared on the North American ‘Mull Of Kintyre ‘ single? it’s curious, ‘Girls’ School’ was considered the A-Side over here while the “B-Side”, ‘Mull Of Kintyre ‘, didn’t even crack the Top 40 eventhough it became one of the Biggest Singles Ever in Britain…

I find that it’s most suitable for the music inside, which I find to be just as “awful”… I put this one into the same bin as ‘Ringo the 4th’…:-)

Ouch, really? I’ve only listened to it twice, but it’s catchy and I’ve been really enjoying it.

atleast you made it to a second listen… I cringe anytime I hear ‘With A Little Luck’ come on… but hey, Paul McCartney is a very versatile artist, so why not showcase some Elevator Music as well…:-)

Exactly — and I was listening to all the other songs, not just With A Little Luck. (‘Famous Groupies’ is an especial piece of gold; ‘I’m Carrying’ is a wonderful ballad, the title track is nice, and I dig — well, if I listed out all the songs that I think are worth listening to, it’d be most of the album. So.)

I’ve only heard three songs of London Town , one is With A Little Luck which I quite like, one is Don’t Let It Bring You Down which is pretty good, and one is Girlfriend which I don’t remember at all.
Love one another.

I like all three of those quite a bit. Girlfriend is quite clever, I think.

No. It’s an early mix that surfaced a couple of years ago. The differences are very obvious upon first listen.
I love ‘WALL’ including the synths, all 5 minutes 92 seconds or whatever it is. For some reason, the instrumental passage when it kicks back in always reminds me of the ‘Thomas The Tank Engine’ tune (the original not the awful new one).

I can play but I can’t sing it………

Girlfriend was originally written by Paul for Michael Jackson to record but a few years had passed with no sign of MJ doing it so Paul recorded it himself. A year after London Town ‘s release, MJ is working on his first solo album as an adult ‘Off the Wall’ and Quincy Jones (the producer of OTW) having recently heard Girlfriend, suggests that Michael covers it. Jones at that point didn’t realise that the song was actually written for MJ.
I prefer Jackson’s version myself, has more groove to it than Paul’s.

this gets to the heart of it… just because “it’s Paul” people want to justify its existence… none of the four of them came anywhere close to equaling any Beatles’ album… sure, there’s flashes of brilliance (‘Listen To What The Man Said’ is up there) but there’s considerably more “eggs” than gems when you look at the body of their solo works… Paul & Ringo carry the most eggs on their backs (“back”, “egg”, heehee…;-) due to the sheer volume that they put out… John probably gets the most critical praise for he didn’t just put out albums because it was time for one and took an extended break from it… the fact that ‘With A Little Luck’ graces ‘Wings Greatest’ speaks a lot for the quality of Paul’s solo works… that same compilation also contains a ‘RAM’ track (almost “as good” an album as ‘London Town ‘) which was a record released before Wings even formed!?!… “Kisses On The Bottom ” indeed…:-)

I like Paul’s version of ‘Girlfriend’ but the “Till the river stops a-flowin…” section is the better section of the song.
