So seeing that some of you folks likes George MartinsClassical music on Yellow Submarine , I’m guessing you gave Paul’s Liverpool Oratorio a listen.
What do you think of it?

I went to the premiere in London………. I’m not an, up-my-own-backside music critic so I accepted that there would be a lot of ‘first hearing’ going on and that I didn’t have the credentials to critique on the night………. Just could say I liked it …or didn’t. I did. I was in some ways staggered. All enveloping voices…..Took me back to my own limited ‘roped in’ 6th form choir experience………Where we found humor in turning the famous Hallalijah chorus into ‘Bollocks-to ya’ without our teachers ever spotting it… Amazing what you can get away with with a look of piety…
Paul wasn’t sitting far away….This was his first really big venture into classical writing. He had help with this new setting with a new collaborator…….not sure how much. I know I felt I wanted him very much to succeed….. To show that if you can write a good melody you can pretty much dress it up anyway you want.
It went down well. Paul thanked everyone……Got his cheers and flowers and I thanked the muses we’d not had a ‘Magical Mystery let-down’
I bought the CD and listened to this a lot in the car driving to london so it grew on me.
In the end the two ‘songs’ that stood out were…..‘The World you’re Coming into’ and the exquisite ‘violin solo’…….played so high up the fret board that only Lassie can hear it.
I think the Oratorio won lots of prizes.
Phew!! Well done Paul.

Bought it on release. Liked it then, still do. Nice mix of popular and classical vocals and music.

According to some news reports coming out…for example https://www.cincinnati.com/sto…..919016007/
a first-ever operatic staging of the uplifting epic, inspired by the musician’s early life, will premiere at Cincinnati Opera’s 2024 Summer Festival, organizers announced Wednesday.
I guess this “operatic staging” is a different thing than the original world premier in 1991??
edit: yes, found my answer:
McCartney’s “Liverpool Oratorio ,” which premiered in 1991 for the 150th anniversary of the Royal Liverpool Society, hit the top of the classical charts. Now McCartney’s “Liverpool Oratorio ” will be an opera. And Cincinnati Opera will present it in the upcoming 2024 Summer Festival.

Hum, what am I doing next June 13-July 27?

Cincinnati Opera wraps its 2024 Summer Festival July 18-27 with the world stage premiere of “Paul McCartney ’s Liverpool Oratorio ” at Cincinnati’s Music Hall.
This classical piece featuring music and lyrics by Paul McCartney and Carl Davis was commissioned by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society in honor of its 150th anniversary and premiered in 1991. The story tells the semi-autobiographical account of a young man named Shanty, who is born during World War II and grows up in Liverpool. The piece follows his struggles and joys while exploring themes of childhood, school days, love, war, and reconciliation.
“McCartney’s melodic pop sensibility is evident alongside stunning classical orchestration, resulting in an accessible yet intricate musical work,” stated Cincinnati Opera in press materials.
Cincinnati Opera’s production of “Paul McCartney ’s Liverpool Oratorio ” will be the work’s first-ever operatic staging, featuring all new sets, costumes, lighting, staging, and choreography. The production also incorporates a 48-voice chorus, dancers from the Cincinnati Ballet, and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
In a letter to the company, McCartney said, “I am writing to express my wholehearted support for this project. I believe that the Cincinnati Opera is uniquely positioned to bring this work to life in a new way, and I have no doubt that your production will be an inspiring experience for all who see it.”
Well, darn it, I won’t be in Cincinnati during this time.
