^ Why?
They were making a film, film’s have soundtracks. I suspect he was very busy on the movie at the time which is why there were so few new songs and they sound a bit rushed – though I like them a bit better than you do. I agree on Eleanor’s Dream – it is the one track I almost skip when listening. I really like the version of Wanderlust on this.
Financially, I guess it did ok though his rep took a hammering.

I know a soundtrack was required but that shouldn’t be an excuse for music that is severely lacking in originality, imagination or quality. Was there such a need to meet set deadlines that Paul couldn’t have pushed them back spent a few more months to work on it?

I’m having a Paul McCartney day and this is the album I’m listening to first. It’s highly underrated in my opinion. There are some really good songs on it.

I too start from the position of being a Beatles and McCartney fan, one who clearly recalls when Beatlemania first took hold in the UK.
I remember eagerly looking forward to Magical Mystery Tour on Boxing Day 1967, and being increasingly embarrassed as it went on. Even to my 15-year old Beatle-besotted brain it was clear that, excepting only the musical sequences, it was very, very bad. The lesson which came across loud and clear was that, while the Beatles were undoubtedly in a class of their own as far as writing songs was concerned, they were very, very bad at writing films. And, let’s be fair, the lion’s share of the responsibility for the Magical Mystery Tour travesty rested with McCartney.
I guess in 17 years the memory must have faded a bit, and he forgot that lesson.
Broad Street taught it to him again, though. In spades.
You can’t write films, Paul. Stick to music.
The music is mostly fine. The Yesterday /Here There And Everywhere /Wanderlust medley is attractive but suffers, perhaps, from thematic disunity. Ballroom Dancing works as a sequence, although it leaves you wondering “Why?”. Silly love songs – interesting variation on the original arrangement, a good look spoilt by the idiotic breakdancer. So bad – a straightforward, successful group performance. Most of the covers are fairly redundant, with little variation from their sources. Extending Eleanor Rigby into a dream fantasy sequence and creating an orchestral development for it is by far the most interesting and imaginative idea in the whole film – unfortunately, the sequence itself is so corny and takes itself so seriously that it doesn’t work – marks for effort here, though.
The multitudes of old pals/guest stars who wander through the proceedings must have gone on to wonder if doing a favour for a friend was too high a price to pay for a blot of this magnitude on their CVs.
A word in favour of the US DVD – two sided, it has 4:3 and widescreen on the two sides, no extras, and WONDERFUL sound.

I’m trying to locate this interesting quote from a critic, but I can’t find it…the idea was that Broad Street was a psychodrama whereby Paul was exorcising his demons/unresolved issues with Lennon, who he unconsciously saw as a father figure/critic, and asserting his independence. I guess the lost tapes signify the hold Lennon had over Paul’s creativity.
This is why Paul changed the lyrics of Here, There And Everywhere to “I need a love of my own.” He needed to have a love of his own, not a love associated with John or The Beatles.

Just wondering: In the “Yesterday ” busking sequence, it looks like he’s playing the Framus Zenith. Does anyone know for sure?
By hook or by crook, I'll be last in this book.

Well.
I just watched this film, and I’m not sure what to say. I guess it was bad as I thought it would be, but in a laughable way that made me actually enjoy it– until about two-thirds of the way through, when I was getting bored out of my mind and counting the minutes till its end. I think it could have been half the length it was and not suffered, but I still enjoyed most of it, if only because PAUL. (And Ringo, and Linda, and George M.)
I really dug the bit where the band are in the warehouse playing ‘Not Such A Bad Boy ‘ because it reminded me of band practise and I felt like I was ‘there’. It’s hard to explain. I also liked the Victorian sequence, even though it was insufferably tangential and– like the rest of the film– way too long, because Paul in period costume (and Ringo, and Linda) =
At the end of ‘No More Lonely Nights’, I remember thinking, ‘Huh, this guitar sound sounds like Pink Floyd– I wonder if David Gilmour is playing it?’ Sure enough, it was– I saw his name in the credits and went ‘WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAAAAAAAAAAAAVE’
The ending was the most what-the-smeg thing I’ve seen all year.
Edit: And fittingly enough, it rains off and on throughout the film and it’s been raining off and on all day here.

As I’ve written before on this forum, I’ve seen this at least twice (I think possibly three times) and every single time I have not finished it. I get about 30 minutes in, go “life is too short” and do something better like watching paint dry, which to be fair is over 9000 times more interesting than watching GMRTBS.
I don’t even know what the ending is does Paul ever get those master recordings back (or whatever the hell he was looking for)? The only scene I remember from the film was ‘Ballroom Dancing’ and that’s because I liked the dancing in it. Everything else has been blacked out (probably for the best to be fair).
I do like the title song though I think it’s the only positive thing to come out of the film.

I really should watch this. I tried once but stopped after ten minutes. I’ve gotten past worst films, I lasted long on the holiday special than this so I’ll give it another go.

Its s**t and insults the fact you’ve wasted 90 minutes (or however long it lasts) on such s**t with such a highly infuriating s**t ending.
@AppleScruffJunior and anyone who hasn’t seen it [the whole way thru].
Paul gets the tapes and then wakes up and we discover the whole shitty movie was a dream of Paul’s. The plot of ‘Magical Mystery Tour ‘ was better.

Oh that is disappointing.
It dragged alot, the songs didn’t have much to do with the plot and when that happens I get bored.
The should of just focused on Paul (and Ringo) trying to find the bad guy and driving around in that cool car.

I find the songs to be dross. The covers are pointless failures compared to the originals and the new tracks (bar ‘No More Lonely Nights’) smack of a bored Paul going thru the motions.
The film never gets going long enough to drag; some of it is horrific viewing. At least ‘Magical Mystery Tour ‘ has the excuse of being deliberately out there.

Also some of the editing is bad like the one scene showing Paul and that criminal guy was a flashback but the movie give no indication that it is one.
The best part of the movie was the car.
Maybe they could of replaced criminal guy with George M then Paul (and Ringo) have to drive around in cool car to prove his innocence and the manager guy is the bad guy who has ties to evil business man.
Then they would need to make the music tie into the plot and not have a bunch of music videos in your movie that don’t tie into anything.

Who thought that was a good idea?!? I thought everyone was taught in school at the age of 11 that the way to write a decent story is TO NOT HAVE “and then Peter woke up and realised it was all a dream” at the end. Lord almighty!
I find MMT entertaining enough I’ve watched it through about 4 times and it keeps my attention unlike whatever the hell Broad Street was meant to be.

I’d call the film a guilty pleasure. Or, as the Dutch would call it, ‘fout’ (which means ‘wrong’, but is just our term for guilty pleasure – something that’s so bad, it’s good).
The hotrod scene always cracks me up. Yes, I’ve watched the film all the way through two or three times. There are some cringe-inducing scenes, and there are some gems in there as well. I like it in a train-wreck sort of way. I think it’s endearing.
Also, what kind of a Paulvert would I be if I couldn’t sit through it? I mean, Paul’s in every scene. If you hate the story, just mute the bloody thing, and feast yer eyes on the protagonist…
Case in point…
